{"id":792848,"date":"2026-02-27T16:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T16:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/792848\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T16:05:23","slug":"food-waste-collections-to-begin-in-bradford-in-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/792848\/","title":{"rendered":"Food waste collections to begin in Bradford in September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Bradford Council is blaming the lengthy delivery times for the vehicles needed to introduce the service for the delay.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A new report into Bradford waste services estimates that around a third of local households will opt into the service when it is introduced.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  If they do, it could improve Bradford\u2019s poor recycling rates.\n<\/p>\n<p>  New recycling policies agreed in 2021<\/p>\n<p>\n  Members of the council\u2019s Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee will be given an update on food waste collections when they discuss the district\u2019s waste services at a meeting on Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2021, the Government agreed new recycling policies that would require all councils across the UK to provide weekly food waste collections for any households that want them.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Although many councils already offer such a service, Bradford Council is one that currently does not offer food waste collection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When it is rolled out, each household will be entitled to receive an internal five-litre caddy for the kitchen and an external 23 litre bin.\n<\/p>\n<p>  Collections not likely to start until September<\/p>\n<p>\n  Bradford Council has received \u00a34.8m from Government to purchase 19 vehicles and tens of thousands of bins for the roll out.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A report to the meeting says the funding will also pay for project management, but not for staff and processing.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It says that the collections are not likely to start until September \u201cbased on current vehicle delivery times.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The report adds \u201cAnalysis from other Local Authorities shows that only 30 per cent to 40 per cent of residents tend to present food waste at kerbside.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cEstimates for Bradford show that potentially, 9,300 tonnes of food waste will be presented by residents.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cSeventeen collection routes are planned, with vehicle delivery expected from April. 46 \u00a0additional staff are required to run the service.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  Waste that can be collected includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uneaten food and plate scrapings\n  <\/li>\n<li>Baked goods such as bread, cakes, and pastries\n  <\/li>\n<li>Dairy products, eggs and eggshells\n  <\/li>\n<li>Fruit and vegetables including raw and cooked vegetables and peelings\n  <\/li>\n<li>Out-of-date or mouldy food\n  <\/li>\n<li>Pet food\n  <\/li>\n<li>Raw and cooked meat or fish, including bones\n  <\/li>\n<li>Teabags and coffee grounds\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>  Bradford recycling rate &#8216;one of lowest in the country&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\n  The report says that Bradford\u2019s current recycling rate \u2013 32 per cent &#8211;
