{"id":792927,"date":"2026-02-27T16:57:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T16:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/792927\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:57:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T16:57:16","slug":"far-right-afd-eyes-court-win-as-springboard-for-state-elections-in-germany-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/792927\/","title":{"rendered":"Far-right AfD eyes court win as springboard for state elections in Germany \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The AfD has shifted steadily rightward since its founding in 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/german-eurosceptic-party-on-brink-of-electoral-breakthrough\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as a Euroskeptic force<\/a>, mobilizing an increasingly radicalized base largely around migration. <\/p>\n<p>Lately, however, Weidel has tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-far-right-afd-attempts-rebranding-as-real-power-comes-within-reach-siegmund-weidel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tone down the rhetoric<\/a> to make her party more palatable to mainstream conservatives. It is currently moving to ban Kevin Dorow, a board member of its youth organisation, for remarks that \u201cobviously suggested a closeness to National Socialism\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welt.de\/politik\/deutschland\/plus699fff23753c96d2522441e0\/ausschluss-von-kevin-dorow-warum-die-afd-spitze-diesen-jugendfunktionaer-fuer-untragbar-erklaert.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Die Welt reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy could test the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/newsletter\/berlin-bulletin\/the-firewall-feud\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-standing firewall <\/a>that has kept Chancellor Friedrich Merz\u2019s center-right bloc from governing with the far right. <\/p>\n<p>A good electoral result in the state of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg next week could signal that these efforts are paying off.
