As part of its pioneering European edge plan, Telef\u00f3nica<\/a> has broken new ground by launching commercial edge computing<\/a> services for businesses and administrations in Spain.<\/p>\n

Services are currently available on five nodes in Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao and A Coru\u00f1a with an anticipated growth up to 17 nodes slated for 2026.<\/p>\n

By bringing computing power closer to the data source, edge computing facilitates fast and efficient data processing, revolutionizing industries and enhancing data sovereignty.<\/p>\n

Telef\u00f3nica\u00b4s edge services are powered by its advanced FTTH (fiber) and 5G Stand Alone (SA) networks, as well as Open Gateway APIs.<\/p>\n

The two service levels provide Edge Basic (focused on stability, sovereignty, and compliance) and Smart Edge (dynamic mobile real-time applications).<\/p>\n

Edge Basic includes sovereign cloud services, AI and data storage near the source and Smart Edge enables real-time, low-latency applications with mobility, dynamic node selection, and private 5G access option.<\/p>\n

The edge infrastructure has been implemented in redundant copper exchanges with high availability and redundancy.<\/p>\n

Telef\u00f3nica\u2019s edge services are aimed at sectors such as Industry 4.0, logistics and retail, autonomous driving or digital twins. This project addresses digital sovereignty by providing an open, decentralized, multi-provider approach and a solution that is compliant with European regulations.<\/p>\n

Telef\u00f3nica has collaborated with CAF to test edge and 5G SA capabilities in the railway sector, displaying low-latency AI applications.<\/p>\n

The initiative is part of a European Common Interest Project<\/a> (IPCEI) backed by the European Commission and Spain\u2019s Recovery Plan.<\/p>\n

Telef\u00f3nica\u2019s edge plan aims to decrease dependency on cloud providers outside the EU and strengthen digital autonomy for Europe.<\/p>\n

The company will showcase its edge innovations during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona.<\/p>\n
