While The Conjuring: Last Rites<\/strong> won\u2019t necessarily mark the end of the franchise \u2013 rather, it\u2019s said to be the ending of the universe\u2019s \u201cphase one<\/a>\u201d \u2013 this year\u2019s upcoming sequel will (allegedly) mark the final Conjuring movie to star Patrick Wilson<\/strong> and Vera Farmiga<\/strong> as Ed and Lorraine Warren. And Entertainment Weekly<\/a> brings us the first images today.<\/p>\n

Director Michael Chaves<\/strong> tells EW, \u201cEven as we were developing it, we were throwing a bunch of ideas out: \u2018How shamelessly big can we make it?\u2019 \u2018How epic can we make it?\u2019 \u2018Is this the culmination of all the demons coming to face them?’\u201d But ultimately, he notes, \u201cI felt strongly that the biggest, most emotional story we could tell was the most personal story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patrick Wilson teases in the same interview with Entertainment Weekly, \u201cThe third film was kind of a detour. It was more a murder mystery, really like a true crime. This really felt like a proper ending to get back to the heart of the franchise, the family of it all<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The outlet reveals that The Conjuring: Last Rites is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens are retired at the beginning of the movie, but a new case pulls them back into one final nightmare\u2026 as always, together.<\/p>\n

The case? The famous Smurl family haunting, which \u201crefers to claims made by Jack and Janet Smurl of\u00a0West Pittston,\u00a0Pennsylvania, who alleged that a\u00a0demon inhabited their home between 1974 and 1989.\u201d You can learn more about the Smurl haunting over on Wikipedia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rebecca Calder<\/strong>, Elliot Cowan<\/strong>, K\u00edla Lord Cassidy<\/strong>, Beau Gadsdon, Tilly Walker, Molly Cartwright, Peter Wight<\/strong>, and Kate Fahy<\/strong> will also star in the new installment.<\/p>\n

The Conjuring: Last Rites\u00a0will release in theaters September 5, 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are currently eight films in\u00a0The Conjuring\u00a0universe \u2014\u00a0The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home,\u00a0The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and\u00a0The Nun 2. That makes\u00a0The Conjuring: Last Rites\u00a0the ninth installment, wrapping up \u201cPhase One\u201d and setting the stage for \u201cPhase Two\u201d down the road.<\/p>\n

The Conjuring\u00a0films are based on the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by\u00a0Patrick Wilson\u00a0and\u00a0Vera Farmiga\u00a0respectively.<\/p>\n
