{"id":798893,"date":"2026-03-02T11:18:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T11:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/798893\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T11:18:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T11:18:16","slug":"glasgow-uni-spin-out-raises-1-6m-for-cancer-detecting-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/798893\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow Uni spin-out raises \u00a31.6M for cancer-detecting AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A spin-out company from the University of Glasgow has secured \u00a31.6M seed investment to launch AI technology that is learning \u2018the language of cancer\u2019 to improve diagnosis and treatment of the disease.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tilebio.com\/company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TileBio<\/a>\u00a0has developed a\u00a0platform\u00a0that allows AI systems to learn the language of diseased\u00a0tissues\u00a0directly from millions of unlabelled medical pathology images to increase\u00a0the speed and accuracy of life-saving diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>The launch seed-funding round has been\u00a0led by Twin Path Ventures with participation from Scottish Enterprise and\u00a0GU Holdings\u00a0Ltd,\u00a0the\u00a0University of Glasgow\u2019s investment company, and\u00a0will support\u00a0AI\u00a0model training at\u00a0a vast\u00a0scale, clinical validation studies and team expansion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fstechsummit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"FS Technology Summit 2026\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Copy-of-FS26-Banners.jpg\" alt=\"FS Technology Summit 2026\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The investment will provide\u00a0runway\u00a0for the new company\u00a0to achieve key technical and validation milestones\u00a0required.<\/p>\n<p>The company emerged from academic research led by Dr Ke Yuan, Dr Adalberto Claudio Quiros, Professor John Le Quesne, Professor David Chang, and Dr Christopher Walsh on computational pathology and representation learning applied to medical images.<\/p>\n<p>A critical differentiator for TileBio is access to large-scale, real-world clinical data.<\/p>\n<p>Its long-term aim is to train one of the largest pathology foundation models globally using more than two million whole slide images from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, working closely with\u00a0the\u00a0organisation\u00a0through formal data governance frameworks.<\/p>\n<p>The self-learning nature of this model will enable cancer detection and triage in the clinic across all cancer types and human disease at the population scale. It will also enable novel biomarker discovery to accelerate drug development and improve therapeutic targeting, while maintaining model interpretability and providing biological insights.<\/p>\n<p>As the company scales, recruitment will focus on deep learning engineers, data managers, regulatory specialists and commercial leads with experience in regulated medical software.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Walsh, TileBio Chief Executive Officer, said: \u201cWe are delighted to launch and work with our partners and investors to grow our technology and scale up what we have worked so hard to achieve over many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe core scientific insight underpinning\u00a0TileBio\u00a0is that histology\u00a0contains\u00a0an inherent structure that can be learned directly from raw images without requiring large volumes of human-annotated labels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditional medical AI has been constrained by the need for expensive, biased, and labour-intensive ground-truth data.
