And then he sent me a photo, and I thought, \u2018oh, far out, that\u2019s an actual croc\u2019,\u201d Collett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">What was initially expected to be a simple retrieval in a narrow stretch of creek quickly escalated into an extensive search across a sprawling creek system and wetlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">On the first night, Collett managed to spot the crocodile under a bridge behind the store, but attempts to approach it using an SES rescue raft failed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The team chased the reptile until 1am before calling it off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The following day brought no sightings and growing frustration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Then, after nightfall, about three kilometres downstream from where it was first seen, the breakthrough came.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThere was a huge tree across the creek, couldn\u2019t get past. And so I thought, no, he\u2019s gone. Turn the boat around, and he\u2019s right there,\u201d Collett recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Acting on pure instinct, Collett dived into action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI just sent it, launched off the front into the darkness, grabbed him &#8230;. and he was swinging around under the water, almost hit my arm, but I managed to grab him. Credit: Sunrise<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The crocodile was much smaller than first thought, measuring under a metre, but no less agile in the water, with Collett joking the croc was likely heading out for a \u201cBunnings snag\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Collett believes the animal was most likely a released or escaped illegal pet, given it was found more than 1000km from its natural habitat in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s been in captivity for that long. He literally looks like he\u2019s come straight out of the bush. He\u2019s got that really wild-type look to him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Despite rumours circulating locally about multiple crocodiles in the area, Collett said he was confident there was only one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The crocodile is now in a quarantine enclosure at the Australian Reptile Park and has undergone a veterinary check, with the vet confirming it was in good health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe literally saved his life, you know, his welfare.
