<\/p>\nWhen financial planner Graham Dixon meets with his clients for their annual check-in, the relief in their voices is palpable. For many it\u2019s a chance to speak freely about their lifestyles \u2013 because Graham is one of the only people in the world who knows they are ridiculously rich.<\/p>\n
He is one of a group of more than 20 advisers at wealth management firm Evelyn Partners tasked with helping National Lottery winners manage their fortunes.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s helped more than 90 of them and says the best part of the job is seeing them gain financial confidence after such a dramatic change.<\/p>\n
\u2018It\u2019s a really fortunate position because you\u2019re brought into their lives and often they haven\u2019t told anybody else,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n
Graham has helped one family hide their wealth from their children, while others have been eager to splash out on luxury holidays with all the family. For some, old habits die hard, with one winner of over \u00a31million continuing to buy supermarket bargains.<\/p>\n
\u2018People say money doesn\u2019t make you happy \u2013 it doesn\u2019t always, some people get in a real head-spin about what it means,\u2019 he says. \u2018But for those who have that peace of mind and can do what they want \u2013 who can just book a holiday and help family \u2013 that\u2019s financial freedom and liberation.\u2019<\/p>\n

While some jackpot winners tell the world about their windfall \u2013 with photographs of Champagne sprays and big cheques splashed in national newspapers \u2013 most people keep the news within a trusted network of immediate family, Graham says.<\/p>\n
And around 5 per cent of winners he sees won\u2019t tell another soul, except for their partner or spouse.<\/p>\n
The key is to think carefully about how wealth could affect your personal relationships and build a strategy that works for you.<\/p>\n
One couple, who Graham has advised for nine years, won around \u00a31.2million and retired from their modest jobs in their mid-50s. But, fearful that it would impact relationships, they haven\u2019t told anyone, not even their daughters.<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve been subtly enjoying their windfall \u2013 buying a campervan, travelling Europe and treating themselves to the occasional bottle of Champagne.<\/p>\n
Winners who don\u2019t wish to share the truth may contrive stories of an inheritance from a long-lost aunt, but others aren\u2019t comfortable with creating \u2018a false reality\u2019 \u2013 causing them \u2018real turmoil\u2019, says Graham.<\/p>\n
\u2018Keeping quiet can turn the win into a big secret and some winners find it difficult living a lie,\u2019 he says. \u2018Whereas others feel sharing the news of their win will change their relationship with family members and feel happier keeping it from them.<\/p>\n
\u2018Clearly the bigger the win, the more difficult it is to keep this secret.\u2019<\/p>\n

One of Graham\u2019s clients is currently facing a storm of anxiety, despite going from \u2018fairly modest means to having a couple of million pounds\u2019, because he has given up work and doesn\u2019t know if his windfall will one day run out.<\/p>\n
He hopes to take more holidays with family and spend a few hundred thousand pounds helping his nephew to get on the housing ladder. Graham is using cash-flow forecasting to see what the man can afford and put his mind at ease.<\/p>\n
