In recent years, ceremonies such as the Gotham Awards and Spirit Awards have done away with separate best actress and actor categories in favor of gender neutral lead and supporting ones. Ramsey, who identifies as non-binary and uses they\/them pronouns, was nominated for lead actress in a drama series at the Emmys for the first season of HBO\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-last-of-us\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-last-of-us\" data-tag=\"the-last-of-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Last of Us<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t have the answer and I wish that there was something that was an easy way around it, but I think that it is really important that we have a female category and a male category,\u201d Ramsey said, adding that it\u2019s important that \u201crecognition for women in the industry is preserved.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRamsey tried to come up with a solution and thought about a category such as \u201cbest performance in a female character,\u201d but they realized that would then create problems for actors playing non-binary character in films and TV shows. Even though Ramsey does not identify as female and says being labeled an \u201cactress\u201d does not feel quite right, they are comfortable being put in the actress category at the Emmys for \u201cThe Last of Us.\u201d At least for now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI have a guttural, \u2018That\u2019s not quite right,\u2019 instinct to [being called an actress],\u201d Ramsey said. \u201cBut I just don\u2019t take it too seriously\u2026 it doesn\u2019t feel like an attack on my identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRamsey explained that they aren\u2019t non-binary to be \u201ctrending\u201d but because they \u201cgrew up more as a little boy than I did a little girl. It\u2019s been very obvious since I was young. I always called myself a tomboy, but it wasn\u2019t that I was a boyish girl, I was always like a bit of an in-between. Leaning to most of the boys side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTo be honest, I grew up more as a little boy than I did a little girl,\u201d they continued. \u201cI always felt more masculine or more on that side of the spectrum. I guess at the moment I don\u2019t feel like I have access to femininity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRamsey currently appears on the second season of \u201cThe Last of Us,\u201d for which they will once again be in contention for an Emmy nomination in the lead actress category.
