{"id":803373,"date":"2026-03-04T12:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T12:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/803373\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T12:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T12:06:14","slug":"eu-commission-backs-spain-after-trumps-iran-war-trade-threat-to-sanchez-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/803373\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Commission backs Spain after Trump\u2019s Iran war trade threat to\u00a0S\u00e1nchez \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission has pledged to back Spain against the overnight commercial threats from US president Donald Trump against Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our common trade policy,\u00a0we are ready to act if necessary to safeguard the interests of the EU,\u201d the commission said on Wednesday (4 March) in an emailed statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The EU has called on Washington to respect the EU-US trade deal reached last July, after confusion and uncertainty emerged following a US Supreme Court ruling limiting tariff powers and prompting Trump to threaten extra tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrade between the European Union and the US is deeply integrated and mutually beneficial. Safeguarding this relationship, particularly at a time of global disruption, is more important than ever and clearly in the interest of both sides,\u201d the commission also said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The remarks follow the threat by Trump to halt all trade with Spain,\u00a0after Pedro S\u00e1nchez\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/205336\/europes-voice-of-moral-sense-speaks-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied the US the use of military bases<\/a> in the peninsula for further attacks against Iran earlier this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could tomorrow, or today, even better, stop everything having to do with Spain, all business having to do with Spain,\u201d Trump said on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US president also justified the move, alluding to Spain\u2019s refusal to pay more to meet Nato spending target.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want anything to do with Spain,\u201d he told reporters in the White House, saying that Spain has been \u201cterrible\u201d and suggesting \u201cto cut off all trade\u201d between Washington and Madrid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018No to war\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The comments took place with German chancellor Friedrich Merz in the room. Merz has taken a very different approach from S\u00e1nchez, arguing that \u00a0\u201cthis is not the time to lecture our partners and allies\u201d over potential breaches of international law.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Trump\u2019s comments, Spain\u2019s socialist prime minister S\u00e1nchez redoubled his stand, saying that the country\u2019s position regarding the war on Iran could be clearly stated in few words: \u201cNo to war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-three years ago, another US administration dragged us into a war in the Middle East. A war that, in theory, it was said at the time, was being fought to eliminate Saddam Hussein\u2019s weapons of mass destruction, bring democracy and ensure global security,\u201d S\u00e1nchez also said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn reality, seen in perspective, it produced the opposite effect; it unleashed the greatest wave of insecurity that our continent has suffered since the fall of the Berlin wall,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iraq war generated a drastic increase in jihadist terrorism, a serious migration crisis in the eastern Mediterranean and a generalised increase in energy prices \u2026 and living costs,\u201d S\u00e1nchez also said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The world, Europe, and Spain have faced this critical moment before. In 2003, a few irresponsible leaders dragged us into an illegal war in the Middle East that brought nothing but insecurity and pain. <\/p>\n<p>Our response then must be our response now:<\/p>\n<p>NO to violations of\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Pedro S\u00e1nchez (@sanchezcastejon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sanchezcastejon\/status\/2029147260324389279?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 4, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez has been critical of the US-Israeli attacks, which have been described by the leftwing leader as \u201cunjustified,\u201d \u201cdangerous,\u201d and \u201coutside international law,\u201d although also calling the Iranian regime \u201chateful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Following Trump\u2019s threats, several other Spanish officials and politicians have expressed solidarity with S\u00e1nchez.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spanish MEP and leader of the socialist group in the European Parliament Iratxe Garc\u00eda warned that \u201cTrump\u2019s threats will hit a wall: the EU\u2019s trade power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll my support to the government of Spain in its condemnation of the US, Israel for violating International law, and for not authorising the use of the joint Spanish-US military bases. It is an affirmation of the principles upon which the EU is built and of national sovereignty,\u201d said former EU chief diplomat and ex-foreign minister Josep Borrell.<\/p>\n<p>European Investment Bank president and former Spanish minister for economy Nadia Calvi\u00f1o told the media on Wednesday that: \u201cWe all benefit from respecting international law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay strong, prime minister S\u00e1nchez. Stay strong, dear Spain.<br \/>The people of Europe do not want to be complicit in a system that kills children and protects those who profit from their blood. Europe deserves better, and you are already part of that change. Thank you,\u201d said UN special envoy to Palestine, Francesca Albanese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Macron voices support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>French president Emmanuel Macron also called S\u00e1nchez on Wednesday to \u201cexpress France\u2019s European solidarity in response to the recent threats of economic coercion, of which Spain was the target,\u201d the \u00c9lys\u00e9e palace said.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Macron echoed S\u00e1nchez\u2019s complaint, stating that the US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran\u2019s supreme leader ayatollah Ali Khamenei were conducted \u201coutside of international law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Macron said that strikes are likely to continue over the coming days.
