<\/p>\nA new plan released on Thursday (March 5) has been likened to Mayfield Park<\/p>\n

Manchester could see a \u2018landmark\u2019 new park and four skyscrapers open in the \u2018one of the city centre\u2019s final forgotten corners\u2019.<\/p>\n
The council unveiled its vision for Water Street, sandwiched between Castlefield and Trinity Way, on Thursday (March 5). It\u2019s one of the last parts of town still dominated by light industry, featuring warehouses and derelict compounds.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s also next to Aviva Studios and new St John\u2019s neighbourhood, meaning there\u2019s plenty of things for potential residents to do, prompting a move to redevelop the land.<\/p>\n

And don’t miss out on our brilliant selection of newsletters HERE.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n The plan is not dissimilar to the regeneration of Mayfield, with four tower blocks containing apartments surrounding a new park roughly equal to the city\u2019s newest green space, at 6.5 acres.<\/p>\n \u201cRight now, the area feels fragmented and disconnected,\u201d said council leader bev Craig. \u201cBut we have a real opportunity to create a thriving new neighbourhood connecting into the historic Castlefield and linking into the vibrant new St Johns area, with another big new city centre park and other green spaces \u2013 an inclusive place with affordable homes.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018Thousands\u2019 of apartments should be built in the scheme, with the authority committing to adding \u2018more genuinely affordable\u2019 homes with the redevelopment.<\/p>\n A new riverside walkway, along the Medlock, is in the works(Image: Manchester council)<\/p>\n Coun Craig added: \u201cAnother brand new public park and more genuinely affordable homes are part of our ambition to make the city centre more attractive and more affordable. We\u2019ve seen the impact Mayfield has already had in the city centre, and in the last year work has started on the first social housing in the city centre for 40 years \u2013 with some schemes delivering a majority of affordable homes.\u201d<\/p>\n The plan will also redevelop existing railway arches for retail and hospitality units and create new walking routes across the area. It will likely be years before construction begins, as the council has only released a blueprint for development at this stage for a public consultation ahead of developers proposing final designs for planning permission.<\/p>\n Railway arches will be regenerated into retail and leisure spots to give the area some industrial character(Image: Manchester council)<\/p>\n The project has the backing of local Deansgate<\/a> councillors.
