The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,\u00a0has\u00a0triggered a \u201cvery high\u201d air pollution alert\u00a0for\u00a0London today\u00a0(6th March).<\/p>\n

Forecasters at Imperial College London advised\u00a0the\u00a0Mayor\u00a0to\u00a0issue\u00a0the\u00a0alert due to a\u00a0likelihood\u00a0of\u00a0high levels\u00a0of particulate matter, caused by a\u00a0combination of Saharan dust\u00a0and\u00a0pollution\u00a0drifting in from continental Europe\u00a0towards London.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pollution levels are expected to be highest early on Friday\u00a0after which stronger winds\u00a0will\u00a0help disperse the accumulated pollution.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is the\u202ffirst\u202fhigh air pollution alert this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Adults and children with lung or heart conditions are advised to adapt physically demanding activities outdoors, especially if symptoms get worse. They are also asked to consider taking routes where there is less traffic. <\/p>\n

Short term exposure (over hours or days) can cause a range of health impacts, including coughing, eye, nose and throat irritation, chest tightness and pain, difficulty breathing, and worsening of any existing lung or heart conditions. <\/p>\n

The Deputy Mayor for environment and energy, Mete Coban said:\u00a0\u201cToxic air\u00a0is responsible for\u00a0around 4,000 premature deaths in\u00a0London\u00a0each year, which is why the\u00a0Mayor\u00a0has done everything in his power to tackle it,\u00a0which\u00a0includes\u00a0launching the world\u2019s largest clean air zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are urging Londoners to look after themselves in this\u00a0high\u00a0pollution\u00a0period,\u00a0stop their engines idling, and refrain from burning wood or garden waste \u2013 all of which contribute to\u00a0high levels\u00a0of pollution. This is particularly important\u00a0in order to\u00a0protect the most vulnerable as we continue building a safer and greener London for everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

City Hall issues\u00a0alerts\u00a0to Londoners, schools,\u00a0and\u00a0London\u00a0boroughs when moderate,\u00a0high\u00a0or\u00a0very high\u00a0air pollution is forecast. High air pollution alerts are also displayed at public locations across London, including all bus stop countdown signs, as well as on the Underground.\u00a0<\/p>\n
