figures, released by the Welsh Government and\u00a0Fly-tipping Action Wales<\/a>, show there were 48,367 cases of illegal waste dumping \u2013 around 133 incidents every day \u2013 logged by local authorities in the same period.<\/p>\nThe statistics also show that 71% of the fly-tipping incidents recorded contained household waste.<\/p>\n
18\u00a0local authorities\u00a0reported an increase in the number of\u00a0incidents, while only four local authorities reported a decrease.<\/p>\n
The largest annual increase\u00a0in\u00a0reported\u00a0fly-tipping was\u00a0in\u00a0Denbighshire\u00a0, where incidents increased by 230%, which Natural Resources Wales says is largely due to\u00a0improvements in\u00a0data\u00a0collection.<\/p>\n
Enforcement actions also reached a six-year high, with over 1,500 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued during the year, alongside 69 successful prosecutions.<\/p>\n
The highest number of prosecutions was recorded in Cardiff (20), followed by Rhondda Cynon Taff (18) and Carmarthenshire (9).<\/p>\n
FPNs are issued for smaller-scale offences, such as littering, minor fly-tipping and failing to check a waste carrier\u2019s licence, while prosecutions target large-scale, repeat or commercial fly-tipping, as well as the dumping of hazardous waste.<\/p>\n
In Newport, enforcement actions increased dramatically from 146 actions to 2,386 (not including investigations) \u2013 the highest of any Welsh authority.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the figures, Heidi Pawlin, Programme Manager for Fly-tipping Action Wales, said: \u201cFly-tipping damages our environment, costs taxpayers millions, and undermines communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
