{"id":808648,"date":"2026-03-06T20:42:20","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T20:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/808648\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T20:42:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T20:42:20","slug":"oma-unveils-domed-casa-wabi-mushroom-pavilion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/808648\/","title":{"rendered":"OMA unveils domed Casa Wabi Mushroom Pavilion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York office of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/oma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OMA<\/a> has created an incubator for mushroom production on the campus of arts organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/casa-wabi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fundaci\u00f3n Casa Wabi<\/a> in Oaxaca, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oma.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OMA<\/a> team led by architect Shohei Shigematsu completed the 200-square-metre dome, alongside other pavilions by famed architects on the Casa Wabi property, which is north of the city of Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303038 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/oma-casa-wabi-mushroom-pavilion_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"View from the water of OMA Mushroom Pavilion dome in Oaxaca\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1772\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>OMA has completed the Mushroom Pavilion at Casa Wabi<\/p>\n<p>The Mushroom Pavilion was designed to &#8220;convey its simple yet important function&#8221; according to OMA.<\/p>\n<p>Formally, it is an ellipsoidal dome made of concrete panels that radiate around an oculus, which brings a specific amount of light into the space for cultivation and gatherings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303034 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/oma-casa-wabi-mushroom-pavilion_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of OMA Mushroom Pavilion dome in Oaxaca\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>OMA created a domed structure for the beachfront site<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We conceived a pavilion for the very specific function of mushroom cultivation while offering a space for people to come together,&#8221; said Shigematsu.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The result is an incubator of both food and community that&#8217;s spatially fit to support all types of activities for the locals, visitors, and the foundation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303314 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/oma-casa-wabi-mushroom-pavilion_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Front view of OMA Mushroom Pavilion dome in Oaxaca\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Poured-in-place concrete was made to retain the iron-rich water, allowing for the development of a patina over time<\/p>\n<p>The dome itself is composed of poured-in-place concrete. It has been &#8220;stamped&#8221; with burlap, a move the architects said was to retain the water of the region, which is high in iron and will give the concrete a specific patina over time.<\/p>\n<p>Under the patchworked intrados, steps ring the circular space, illuminated in part by the oculus.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/02\/03\/casa-wabi-orchid-pavilion-mexico-cca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cca-casa-wabi-orchid-pavilion_dezeen_2364_sq3-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Casa Wabi Pavilion\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> CCA orients wooden Casa Wabi pavilion around orchid cultivation\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The chamber has been divided into three areas by walkways, each area for a different stage of the mushroom process \u2013 one for fruiting, one for incubation and one for storage \u2013 with additional space for people to sit.<\/p>\n<p>OMA described this set up as a &#8220;panopticon viewing experience&#8221;. The different stages of the process can be shown all at once.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303310 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/oma-casa-wabi-mushroom-pavilion_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Oculus of OMA Mushroom Pavilion dome in Oaxaca\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An oculus brings light into the interior gathering and cultivation space<\/p>\n<p>While the inward focus of the process is paramount, OMA also made concessions to the landscape, despite the closed nature of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>From inside, a staircase leads up to a rectangular viewing platform that protrudes from the top of the structure, which allows for views of the ocean-side landscape.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303309 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/oma-casa-wabi-mushroom-pavilion_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x731.jpg\" alt=\"Viewfinder window in OMA Mushroom Pavilion dome in Oaxaca\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2027\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A set of stairs leads to a rectangular viewfinder window<\/p>\n<p>Fundaci\u00f3n Casa Wabi, led by Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, has a primary building that serves as a residence, gallery and workshop that was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese influence on the organisation of the property was meaningful to Shigematsu, himself Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a Japanese architect, it was especially meaningful to contribute an art campus guided by Japanese philosophy and spatial traditions,&#8221;
