{"id":80921,"date":"2025-05-07T04:25:17","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T04:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/80921\/"},"modified":"2025-05-07T04:25:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T04:25:17","slug":"housing-block-tenants-hit-out-at-squalid-living-conditions-as-mp-calls-for-urgent-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/80921\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing block tenants hit out at &#8216;squalid&#8217; living conditions as MP calls for urgent action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bristol MP Carla Denyer is demanding action over horrific conditions in Queen\u2019s Court flats where tenants face rising rents, black mould and threats<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_LC_010525queenscourt_04.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Queen&#8217;s Court issues with mould<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Residents of a troubled housing block in Bristol have spoken out about \u201csqualid\u201d living conditions, rent increases and &#8220;threats of eviction&#8221; \u2013 prompting their MP to demand urgent intervention from the property management company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Carla Denyer, Green MP for Bristol Central, visited Queen\u2019s Court in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/clifton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Clifton<\/a> and described being appalled by what she saw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In a letter to property managers City Estates, she urged them to meet with residents \u201cas a matter of urgency\u201d and warned the firm is falling short of its legal obligations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The block, long criticised for issues including damp, mould and general disrepair, has been a source of concern for Denyer since her time as a local councillor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Now as MP, she is taking renewed action following direct reports from tenants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In her letter, Denyer wrote that conditions included \u201cdamp, mould and rot; failing pipe work; water leaking into properties; no access to water for days at a time; filthy brown waste water coming up through the plug hole of a bath, and much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_LC_010525queenscourt_00jpeg.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She also criticised what she described as \u201cdisproportionate\u201d rent increases and reports that some tenants have been threatened with eviction, despite the substandard conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Following her visit, Denyer said: \u201cI was absolutely appalled to see the frankly squalid conditions that residents at Queen\u2019s Court are being forced to live in \u2013 and further shocked to hear that despite City Estates failing in their basic duties to make repairs, tenants are being slapped with rent increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sign up to receive daily news updates and breaking news alerts straight to your inbox for free <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3r1T6AI\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is completely unacceptable and I\u2019ve written to City Estates to make this clear. I\u2019ve urged them to meet with residents to hear their concerns first hand, as I did, and I will be keeping a close eye on the situation to make sure City Estates meet their obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Residents\u2019 fears have been exacerbated by the distribution of energy performance certificates and &#8216;How to Rent&#8217; guides, documents that are legally required before a Section 21 eviction notice can be served. Many see this as a sign that evictions may be imminent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_LC_010525queenscourt_01jpeg.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Carla meeting tenants<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Denyer added: \u201cI\u2019m really disappointed that City Estates don\u2019t seem willing to engage properly with the tenants at Queen\u2019s Court. All that these tenants are asking for is a decent place to live at a fair price. I won\u2019t let this matter drop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Green councillors Serena Ralston and George Calascione, elected to the area last May, have been actively supporting residents and pressing City Estates for improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cllr Ralston said: \u201cThere is a long history of poor conditions at Queen\u2019s Court. While there have been some repairs, it\u2019s really sad and frustrating to hear from residents that they are still experiencing significant issues, especially when some tenants\u2019 rents are set to rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cResidents who have complained are trying to improve poor conditions which have the clear potential to damage their health and their mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I am particularly concerned about young families in these properties. Damp and mould are a well-evidenced health hazard to young children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_LC_010525queenscourt_03.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Queen&#8217;s Court issues with mould<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One tenant, who asked not to be named, described living in Queen\u2019s Court as \u201ca fight against mould and water issues&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another resident said: \u201cI feel trapped in this place. I won\u2019t invite my friends around out of shame. I\u2019m never happy to come home after a long day. This whole building is made out of depression and black mould and it is exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Residents claim City Estates has not agreed to meet with them, despite repeated calls to do so. Bristol Live has contacted City Estates for comment, but has yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_LC_010525queenscourt_07.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Queen&#8217;s Court issues with mould<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a> commented on the action it had taken to signpost residents or those affected by similar issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A spokesperson said: \u201cWe issued two Civil Penalty Notices in October 2023 to the owners of Queens Court for non-compliance with licensing conditions and non-compliance with an improvement notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Property licensing schemes give us powers to be able to inspect and investigate properties to make sure homes are being well managed and meet minimum standards. Where this is not the case, we can take appropriate action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFollowing further investigation, further improvement notices have been issued, and we continue to work with tenants to provide advice and support where possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We would advise any tenants experiencing issues to report these to us using our <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/digital.bristol.gov.uk\/housing\/tenant-problems-in-your-property\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"online formLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">online form<\/a> or by emailing <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/mailto:private.housing@bristol.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"private.housing@bristol.gov.ukLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">private.housing@bristol.gov.uk<\/a>, and we will investigate issues in line with our policies.
