Television hitmaker Ryan Murphy<\/a> has returned with his latest glossy TV biopic, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.<\/p>\n

Set against the backdrop of 90s Manhattan, it explores the romance between JFK Jr. and his future wife<\/a>, Carolyn Bessette, who both died in a tragic plane accident in 1999.<\/p>\n

Based on a book by Elizabeth Beller, the drama also features Hollywood star Daryl Hannah, played by model and actress Dree Hemingway.<\/p>\n

Hannah rose to fame in the 80s with roles in Blade Runner<\/a> and beloved mermaid romcom Splash<\/a>, before playing sinister assassin Elle Driver in Quentin Tarantino<\/a>\u2019s Kill Bill films.<\/p>\n

Hannah and the assassinated US president\u2019s son dated during the 90s, although she has taken umbrage with Murphy\u2019s portrayal of her character in the TV series.<\/p>\n

Describing the show\u2019s portrayal of her as \u2018not even remotely accurate,\u2019 she went on to hit back against five specific \u2013 and categorically \u2018false\u2019 -allegations.<\/p>\n

In an incendiary essay for the New York Times<\/a>, Hannah described the show as \u2018tragedy-exploiting television\u2019 which portrayed her character as \u2018irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate.\u2019<\/p>\n

Calling the decision \u2018no accident,\u2019 she continued: \u2018Storytelling requires tension. It often requires an obstacle. But a real, living person is not a narrative device. <\/p>\n

Describing how the film elevates Bessette by eviscerating her character, she added: \u2018Isn\u2019t it textbook misogyny to tear down one woman in order to build up another?\u2019<\/p>\n

Referring to specific events within the series, she said: \u2018I have never used cocaine<\/a> in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties. I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone\u2019s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis\u2019 death to a dog\u2019s.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct \u2013 and they are false,\u2019 she wrote.<\/p>\n

She also claimed that she had received \u2018hostile\u2019 and \u2018threatening\u2019 messages since the show had aired.<\/p>\n

Sympathising with Hannah\u2019s plight, viewers have shared their dismay for the series\u2019 version of events on social media.<\/p>\n

X user GhostMellie pointed out that Murphy \u2018has never been able to be respectful to anyone involved ever,\u2019 while SoapsandSciFi said that the show was full of \u2018sickness and bitterness.\u2019<\/p>\n

Referring to his 2022 serial killer biopic, NotMikeHarlow joked that \u2018Jeffrey Dahmer got a more flattering portrayal than they\u2019ve given her!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Maybe daryl hannah can finally put a stop to ryan murphy,\u2019 added greatestdisease.<\/p>\n

In spite of the ongoing controversy, Love Story has largely proved successful with critics and viewers alike, contributing to an 80% \u2018fresh\u2019 score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n

This includes Metro\u2019s <\/strong>own Rebecca Cook, describing it as \u2018captivating\u2019 and \u2018dazzling\u2019 <\/a>in our review of the series.<\/p>\n

This comes soon after the nephew of JFK Jr, Jack Schlossberg, branded the show \u2018grotesque.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

Appearing on\u00a0CBS Sunday Morning<\/a>, the 33-year-old said: \u2018If you want to know someone who\u2019s never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy.<\/p>\n

Calling the show \u2018capital F for fiction,\u2019 he added: \u2018The guy knows nothing about what he\u2019s talking about, and he\u2019s making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else\u2019s life,\u2019 he slammed.<\/p>\n

He went to suggest that Murphy \u2018donate some of the millions of dollars of profit that he\u2019s making to some of the causes that John championed\u2019 and help keep the memory of Jr.\u2019s father, assassinated President JFK, alive.<\/p>\n

\u2018This is not a documentary,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Love Story is the latest Murphy creation beset by controversy for its portrayal of real-life people.<\/p>\n

In 2017, 101-year-old actress Olivia de Havilland sued Murphy and FX over her portrayal in Feud: Bette and Joan, alleging unauthorised use of her image and reputation damage.<\/p>\n

While she claimed that the show had painted her in a negative light, a judge ultimately ruled in Murphy\u2019s favour, citing free speech protections.<\/p>\n

In 2022, his Netflix<\/a> series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was criticised by the families<\/a> of the serial killer\u2019s victims for its insensitivity and perceived romanticisation of the killer.<\/p>\n

Follow-up series subsequently explored the lives and crimes of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, and murderer and grave robber Ed Gein<\/a> \u2013 facing similar criticism for embellishment of real-life events.<\/p>\n

In response to the furore that accompanied his Jeffrey Dahmer story, Murphy said at the time: \u2018We weren\u2019t really interested in Dahmer the monster.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was [about] who was complicit in making the monster. There were many, many different things involved in that. It was a complicated human story. It tackled systemic\u00a0racism<\/a>, homophobia. We were always thinking of the victims.\u2019<\/p>\n

Metro has reached out to Ryan Murphy\u2019s representatives for comment.<\/strong><\/p>\n
