It\u2019s really interactive and very fun&#8217;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_AMR_MEN_060525_SM_09.jpg\" alt=\"Supermassive opens in Manchester City Centre this summer and will feature a number of state-of-the-art and unique light installations\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Supermassive opens in Manchester City Centre this summer and will feature a number of state-of-the-art and unique light installations(Image: Supermassive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One of the first things we\u2019re told when we step inside a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/museums\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">museum<\/a> or art gallery is to look but not touch &#8211; yet a new immersive experience is actively encouraging everyone to touch and mess around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Taking over <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/mayfield\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Depot Mayfield<\/a> for three months this summer will be Manchester\u2019s \u2018first fully immersive digital playground\u2019 in the form of Supermassive. Described as an \u2018indoor, open-world adventure\u2019, the experience will feature interactive tech and games, multi-sensory art, musical environments and responsive AI characters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Led by a group of artists and designers using 90% of reclaimed materials, the \u2018part game, part gallery, part fever dream\u2019 opens from June 13 and aims to spark the imagination in both children and adults with creative play elements like neon sandpits, unique puzzles, strange inventions and ball pits \u2018with a twist\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s just going to be very different from anything else, it\u2019s actually quite hard to explain really,\u201d Ben Kercher, co-founder of Supermassive, tells the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Evening News.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe wanted to come up with something that was more inspirational rather than educational. It\u2019s very cool, it\u2019s really artistic. Our main goal here is to just make it really, really fun and have something that is really entertaining to anybody who comes in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_AMR_MEN_060525_SM_05.jpg\" alt=\"The experience will feature neon sandpits and AI chatbots you can interact with\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The experience will feature neon sandpits and AI chatbots you can interact with(Image: Supermassive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Amongst the experience will be the chance to be roasted by an AI chatbot mouse and the ability to play the piano alongside some reactive balls, alongside the opportunity to explore project-mapping puzzles and kinetic sculptures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Led by festival creatives who have worked at the likes of Bluedot and Boomtown over the years, the unique experience has been more than two years in the making with the Supermassive team quietly taking over residency in the old Argos unit in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a> Shopping Centre to develop and refine their DIY-style installations through test sessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe all come from the festival scene and for the last ten years, we\u2019ve been doing interactive light art and sound art installations at lots of events across the country,\u201d Ben explained. \u201cWe basically just realised we could make it into this whole immersive experience with lots of interactivity to it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_AMR_MEN_060525_SM_04.jpg\" alt=\"There will be a number of quirky and strange inventions on display\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>There will be a number of quirky and strange light inventions on display(Image: Supermassive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s made up of a lot of really cool, new technology that\u2019s not really been seen before. It\u2019s really interactive and very fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The city centre experience will also feature a light-art <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-cafes\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">caf\u00e9<\/a> and bar on the rooftop of Depot Mayfield, which will include a stunning centrepiece in the form of a music-reactive water fountain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe\u2019re making the whole rooftop like a lighthouse caf\u00e9,\u201d Ben says. \u201cWe\u2019re building this huge lighthouse with seating areas in caves which are then all situated around this kinetic water sculpture that reacts to live music.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_AMR_MEN_060525_SM_08.jpg\" alt=\"Supermassive opens at Depot Mayfield from June 13 for three months\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Supermassive opens at Depot Mayfield from June 13 for three months(Image: Supermassive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe higher the volume of music that is being played, the higher the water will spout up. There will also be lights that reflect the bass and things like that to just bounce off the sound of music. We\u2019re very excited about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With tickets costing an average of \u00a316 for adults and \u00a311 for children, the team behind Supermassive have also tried to make it as accessible as possible for families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ben explained: \u201cIt\u2019s very important to us that this allows more people to be inspired and given a chance to interact with light art. It\u2019s one of our biggest mantras and why we did this in the first place, so to be able to try and get as many people to visit it as possible is a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Tickets for Supermassive <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supermassive.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">can be bought online here<\/a>, with dates available between June 13 and September 13.
