{"id":814981,"date":"2026-03-09T18:59:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T18:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/814981\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T18:59:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T18:59:16","slug":"bristol-bears-pay-tribute-to-one-of-their-greatest-ever-captains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/814981\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol Bears pay tribute to one of their &#8216;greatest ever captains&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Matt\u2019s passion for the sport left a lasting impact across the Bristol rugby community.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2_Bristol-Rugby-Team-2010-11.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Matt Salter, Bristol Rugby team 2010\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Matt Salter, Bristol Rugby team 2010(Image: Jon Kent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Bristol Bears have tribute to former club captain and \u2018dedicated family man\u2019 who has died aged 49.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Matt Salter, an iconic figure in recent Bears&#8217; history is being remembered by the club as one of their \u2018greatest ever captains\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Salter led the club for four seasons starting in 2004, regaining Bristol Bear\u2019s position in the Guinness Premiership and finished third in the table in the 2006-07 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The ex-flanker has been described by the club as a \u2018no-nonsense, tough tackling, ambassador\u2019 for the team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The club said in a tribute that Salter was a \u2018talented dual-code athlete who remained involved with the game long after his retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Matt trained young players as Head Coach at <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/clifton\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Clifton<\/a> RFC and later as a Director of Rugby at Clifton College, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-news\/tributes-highly-respected-former-bristol-10853558\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">who paid tribute to him over the weekend.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The club said Mr Salter\u2019s passion for the sport left a lasting impact on the Bristol community, adding he was a dedicated family man to his wife and three children Charlotte, Isabella and Fergus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-bears\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Bristol Bears<\/a> said in their tribute: \u201cBristol Bears are saddened to learn of the death of former club captain Matt Salter at the age of 49.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Salter was an iconic figure in Bristol\u2019s recent history and will be remembered as one of the club\u2019s greatest ever captains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHe led the club for four consecutive seasons from 2004. During this time Bristol regained their position in the Guinness Premiership and finished third in the table in the 2006-07 season.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Matt Salter\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/0_GettyImages-80087476.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Matt Salter\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Matt Salter(Image: Stu Forster\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cPlaying mainly as a no-nonsense, tough tackling blindside flanker, Matt was an excellent ambassador for Bristol and revelled in the role of skipper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHe enjoyed a varied career, including spells in rugby league, and was unfortunate not to receive representative honours at senior level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cDuring his playing career, he made more than 150 appearances across two spells with Bristol, representing the club with distinction in the top flight of English rugby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBorn in London, Salter began his senior career with Blackheath before spells with West Hartlepool and Bristol Shoguns. After a season with Leeds Tykes, he returned to Bristol in 2004, where he went on to captain the side from 2004 to 2008 and was named captain of the Guinness Premiership Dream Team in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cA talented dual-code athlete, Salter also played rugby league professionally for London Broncos and represented Great Britain at Under-19 level earlier in his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFollowing his retirement from playing in 2009, Salter remained deeply involved in the game in Bristol.
