{"id":81757,"date":"2025-05-07T11:49:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T11:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/81757\/"},"modified":"2025-05-07T11:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T11:49:12","slug":"german-firms-in-china-hit-hard-by-us-tariffs-but-in-china-for-china-paying-off-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/81757\/","title":{"rendered":"German firms in China hit hard by US tariffs, but \u2018in China for China\u2019 paying off: poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The tit-for-tat tariff war between the United States and China has induced a notable decline in the economic outlook perceived by German firms in China, but their investment plans in the country remain largely unimpeded, according to a business advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A recent business survey by the German Chamber of Commerce in China indicates that its members have claimed to be most affected by Washington\u2019s tariffs on goods from the country, followed by Beijing\u2019s retaliatory tariffs on American goods.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But the impact is more indirect, transmitted through the adverse effects of the soaring tariffs on China\u2019s economy, rather than directly harming their operations, given their limited exposure to direct trade with the US, according to Oliver Oehms, executive director and board member of the German Chamber of Commerce in northern China.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cMost of our member companies have been \u2018in China for China\u2019 for a series of years,\u201d Oehms said, referring to a strategy that many foreign firms adopted regarding their investment and production in the world\u2019s second-largest economy, by serving Chinese consumers rather than international ones.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe very deep localisation means they are kind of isolating their operations in China from US exposure, and that\u2019s the good news,\u201d Oehms said. \u201cThe \u2018in China for China\u2019 strategy is paying off, in this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Since US President Donald Trump\u2019s return to the White House this year, Washington has imposed tariffs totalling 145 per cent on most Chinese imports, bringing the effective tariff rate to about 156 per cent.
