Civic dignitaries, veterans and councillors will be in attendance to commemorate the sacrifice and bravery of those who played their part in securing victory during the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>On May 8, 1945, <strong>millions of Britons took to the streets in joy<\/strong> as news broke that the Axis powers in Europe had finally surrendered. Over the course of the war, tens of thousands of Mancunians had answered their country\u2019s call, either in the armed forces or the home front, playing their part in securing a hard-fought victory.<\/p>\n<p>The VE Day ceremony follows <a href=\"https:\/\/secretmanchester.com\/manchester-ve-day-celebrations\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_self\" class=\"shortcode-outbound-link\" data-has-ga=\"true\" data-ga-type=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/secretmanchester.com\/manchester-ve-day-celebrations\/\" data-action=\"text_cta_1\" data-category=\"click_internal\">celebrations<\/a> which took place on <a href=\"https:\/\/secretmanchester.com\/things-to-do-may-bank-holiday\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_self\" class=\"shortcode-outbound-link\" data-has-ga=\"true\" data-ga-type=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/secretmanchester.com\/things-to-do-may-bank-holiday\/\" data-action=\"text_cta_2\" data-category=\"click_internal\">bank holiday Monday<\/a> in Manchester, where a number of <strong>street parties<\/strong> took place for local people to come together to pay their own tribute to the sacrifices made by past generations.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66156\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"Remembrance Sunday at the Manchester Cenotaph\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Remembrance-Sunday-at-the-Manchester-Cenotaph.jpg\"\/>Credit: Manchester City Council When and where will the VE Day ceremony take place in Manchester? <\/p>\n<p>People will be invited to congregate around the<strong> Cenotaph in St Peter\u2019s Square<\/strong> in advance of 12 noon, on <strong>Thursday 8th May<\/strong>. From 11.55am the Leader of Manchester City Council, the Lord Mayor and other civic and military dignitaries will make their way to the Cenotaph ahead of the Last Post being sounded. A maroon will be fired at midday to mark the beginning of a<strong> two minute silence<\/strong>, with a second maroon being fired to mark its end.<\/p>\n<p>A<strong> wreath and flowers<\/strong> will be laid in memory of those who gave their lives during the conflict.
