In fact, she has not beaten the 21-year-old since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/iga-swiatek-notices-something-obvious-about-coco-gauffs-game-after-their-french-open-semi-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though Swiatek has now turned her attention toward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/italian-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Open<\/a> title defence, there is no denying that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/jim-courier-claims-iga-swiatek-has-said-something-really-weird-after-losing-to-coco-gauff-in-madrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madrid Open<\/a> loss was one of the worst of her career so far.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2212737956-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Alvaro Medranda\/Quality Sport Images\/Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-86775\" \/>Photo by Alvaro Medranda\/Quality Sport Images\/Getty Images<strong>Iga Swiatek explains why she played so poorly against Coco Gauff in Madrid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many were expecting a titanic battle when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/iga-swiatek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iga Swiatek<\/a> faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/coco-gauff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coco Gauff<\/a> in the Madrid Open semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>But instead it was arguably their most one-sided clash so far, as Gauff wrapped up the match in just one hour and four minutes after losing just two games.<\/p>\n<p>Swiatek was emotional on court as she struggled to keep the ball in court, as she fired 21 unforced errors while winning just 35% of her first serve points.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of competing in Rome, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/iga-swiatek-explains-what-she-wished-she-had-done-differently-in-her-heavy-defeat-to-coco-gauff-in-madrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swiatek touched on her display against Gauff in Spain<\/a> once again, and explained what contributed to her performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, the match with Coco for sure wasn\u2019t good. I had trouble focusing. I wasn\u2019t moving well. I think everything kind of built up at one moment,\u201d the World number two said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why the score was like that. It\u2019s just like one day. You can\u2019t judge everything by it. I\u2019m continuing the work that I\u2019ve been doing. I trust the process.
