It largely flopped as a PvE experience in a campaign named Save the World, and looked to be going the way of many failed live service titles we see today.

The grand pivot to a Battle Royale game saved Fortnite, but that Save the World campaign has always remained in the background as a paid product. From 16th April 2026, developer Epic Games has confirmed Save the World will become a free-to-play title within Fortnite.

In this mode, you team up with friends and players online to build forts and fight back against monsters — think of it as a spin on the tower defence genre.

For anyone who bought Save the World since its release, they will be rewarded with gold, vouchers, and superchargers as a thank you. “Founders will continue earning V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing Challenges,” Epic Games clarifies.

You can no longer buy the Save the World campaign, as the developer has now pulled the paid listing from the store as it prepares the free-to-play version. However, exisiting owners can continue to play the game, and anyone interested off the back of today’s announcement can pre-register their interest. There are decals and skins on offer if certain milestones are met before the April 2026 launch.

Today’s announcement follows on from the news shared yesterday that the price of V-Bucks, the in-game premium currency, will become more expensive. Previously, the Save the World campaign has been an excellent source of V-Bucks for hardcore Fortnite players, so the shift to a free-to-play format for the PvE mode likely played a part in the decision to hike the price of the currency up.

Are you interested in checking out the Save the World mode from Fortnite for free?
