The \u00a3580,000 decrease amounts to a 40% cut from the union\u2019s previous funding level of \u00a31.45m.<\/p>\n
Unite described the cut as \u2018unprecedented\u2019 and said it plans to formally consult its members on whether they want to remain in the Labour Party.<\/p>\n
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham commented:\u00a0\u201cWorkers are scratching their heads asking whose side are Labour on, who do they really represent, because it certainly isn\u2019t workers. Workers and communities are paying the price.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cThe cut in affiliation fee shows the anger of Unite members. Stop taking workers for granted, spine up, do your job and be real Labour.\u201d<\/p>\n
Refuse workers in Birmingham have been on\u00a0strike for over 12 months<\/a>, with agency staff\u00a0voting to join the industrial action last year<\/a>, over the city council\u2019s decision to remove Waste Recycling and Collection Officer (WRCO) roles.<\/p>\n Unite say staff performing the \u2018safety-critical\u2019 WRCO role will lose around \u00a38,000 a year under the plans, a\u00a0figure disputed by the council<\/a>.<\/p>\n In February, refuse workers and agency staff in Birmingham voted to extend strike action past local elections<\/a> in May and into September.<\/p>\n
