Louis Vuitton menswear creative director Pharrell has been criticised for the luxury brand’s lacklustre Met Gala<\/a> looks – including one very controversial ensemble that was widely condemned online.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pharrell, 52, was one of the co-chairs of the 2025 Met Gala as the world’s biggest celebrities stormed the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in couture inspired by this year’s theme.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The dress code for the prestigious fashion event, hosted by Vogue’s Anna Wintour<\/a>, was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style –\u00a0a nod to the menswear and suiting seen in the Costume Institute’s spring exhibit at the Met.<\/p>\n

The American fashion designer, who has attended the Met eight times, was secretly\u00a0recruited by Wintour to be one of the co-hosts for this year’s edition shortly after he was named menswear creative director in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So all eyes were on the ‘Happy’ singer, who dressed some of the biggest names in entertainment for his Met Gala debut as the label’s menswear designer – but many felt Pharrell’s creations missed the mark.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year’s cohort of celebrity ambassadors for the brand included Zendaya<\/a>, The Bear star Jeremy Allen White<\/a>, Sabrina Carpenter and Doechii, Callum Turner, Pusha T, and the White Lotus<\/a> star LISA – with Pharrell leading the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As their custom outfits were revealed over the course of the night, viewers at home noticed a strange similarity between the women’s looks – as one X user noted ‘Pharrell got everybody without pants’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They continued: ‘I’m crying, I’m so confused right now.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

K-pop superstar Lisa, who recently made her on-screen debut in the third season of HBO’s The White Lotus, wore a Louis Vuitton lace bodysuit under an embroidered blazer in a look that sparked controversy\u00a0<\/p>\n

The post was accompanied by photographs of Espresso singer Sabrina, K-pop singer and White Lotus actress Lisa, as well as Pharrell’s wife\u00a0Helen Lasichanh – all wearing cinched bodysuits and jackets but no pants.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was quickly reposted by a fellow X user, who questioned why Pharrell had been given the job at Louis Vuitton.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Stop letting music producers become creative directors for fashion houses, I beg,’ their message read.<\/p>\n

While most felt that Pharrell’s custom blazer and bodysuit – an ode to the ‘stage suit of 20th century showmen’ – was a perfect match for Sabrina’s style, they argued it didn’t push this year’s theme far enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Let me speak my truth, yes Sabrina looks amazing and her body is tea, but I was expecting more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Like it’s the Met Gala and it’s basically another bodysuit,’ they wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another said: ‘Pharrell knows he’s wrong as hell for all those pantless looks.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

A third noted: ‘People forget that music can be fashion but fashion cannot be music.’\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘You\u2019re quite short, no pants for you,’ she recalled his notes, during a red carpet interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His decision to style her in a pantless ensemble attracted some criticism, as one Instagram user wrote ‘he failed to deliver with everyone’.<\/p>\n

‘LV stop working with that man please,’ they wrote. ‘He dared to tell her he was too short for something else, if a director can’t make her ideas work, he’s a bad director who lacks creativity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘The Met is all about creating unique pieces according to the theme and he failed to deliver with everyone.’<\/p>\n

Another said: ‘It didn\u2019t give anything special because it\u2019s like a normal look to her.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

The menswear designer also waded into controversy for what many deemed was a disrespectful detail on Blackpink singer Lisa’s Louis Vuitton ensemble – leading some to question\u00a0whether she had brushed up on the theme at all.<\/p>\n

She accessorized the look with a set of LV logo-adorned tights – also seen on Pharrell’s wife Helen – and a monogrammed handbag.<\/p>\n

But it was the elaborate embroidery featured on the Blackpink singer’s lace bodysuit, most visible in the panty area, that had caused quite a stir on social media.<\/p>\n

According to British Vogue, a face resembling that of Black civil rights icon Rosa Parks was etched into the fabric, among others.<\/p>\n

The print was reportedly created by American artist Henry Taylor, who also attended the Met Gala in custom Louis Vuitton, and was originally commissioned by Pharrell Williams for his debut spring 2024 collection.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite what appeared to be a historical nod to the theme, Lisa’s Met Gala look still caused a stir on social media, where many people shared their utter shock at the fashion moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘Rosa Parks on her panties\u2026\u2026..’ one user wrote on X.<\/p>\n

‘Rosa Parks embroidered panties\u2026 put Pharrell in jail expeditiously!!’ another person jokingly said.<\/p>\n

A third user commented: ‘The fact she’s literally going to be inside at her table sitting on Rosa Parks face for an event unveiling a Black Style exhibition is beyond me.’<\/p>\n

‘Using Rosa Parks’ image in this manner appears to be a blatant lack of respect and sensitivity towards her legacy and the struggles she faced during the Civil Rights Movement,’ someone else pointed out.<\/p>\n

‘Furthermore, it reinforces harmful racial stereotypes & undermines the progress made in combating racism.’<\/p>\n

‘I can’t believe this,’ one stunned user simply said.<\/p>\n

In a statement to The Cut, a representative for Louis Vuitton later confirmed ‘none of the individuals in any of the garments are Rosa Parks’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Referring to Lisa’s outfit – and the backlash it sparked – they clarified: ‘The faces seen on this look, as well as on previous LV garments featuring Taylor\u2019s artwork, are all drawn from his personal life \u2013 family members, friends, and neighbors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘These figures come directly from Henry\u2019s existing artworks, which he provided to LVMH for Pharrell\u2019s debut collection with Louis Vuitton in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘None of the individuals depicted in any of the garments are Rosa Parks or other well-known figures from Black cultural history. They are all people from Henry\u2019s own life.’<\/p>\n

While most LV outfits were branded boring, Pharrell’s creation for Anxiety rapper Doechii was declared the dandiest of them all – as she made her Met Gala debut in a bold suit that was perfectly tailored to the theme<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Doechii, 26, who puffed on a cigar while posing for snaps, was dressed by Pharrell in a\u00a0monogrammed jacket and accompanying checkered Bermuda shorts.<\/p>\n

\u00a0He teamed the look with burgundy loafers, knee-high socks and a silk scarf tied in a bow, and completed it with jewellery from\u00a0Tiffany & Co as well as a Louis Vuitton stamp on her cheek.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Doechii’s debut was somewhat tainted<\/a> after a viral video that appeared to show her berating her team was posted online.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The clips, which were recirculated online, seemingly showed Doechii\u00a0yelling at her helpers to bring her more umbrellas as she attempted to exit The Mark Hotel.<\/p>\n
