Rolly Romero believes Canelo Alvarez\u2019s approach to boxing is \u2018disgusting\u2019 and says UFC CEO Dana White won\u2019t tolerate it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canelo is gearing up for a mega-fight with Terence Crawford<\/a> in September, which, according to reports, will reward the Mexican superstar with a huge $150million.<\/p>\n

It will be the second of Canelo’s four fights for Riyadh SeasonCredit: Getty<\/p>\n

The fight was announced after Canelo defeated Cuba\u2019s William Scull<\/a> in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this past weekend, with the country\u2019s boxing chief Turki Alalshikh confirming White as co-promoter for the Las Vegas spectacle.<\/p>\n

Canelo became a two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion by overcoming Scull via unanimous decision, but the event was overshadowed by the lacklustre performances of both men.<\/p>\n

In fact, the bout set a new record for the fewest punches thrown<\/a> in a 12-round fight, with just 445 punches \u2014 Canelo with 152 and Scull 293 \u2014 thrown over the distance.<\/p>\n

The night before, Romero upset Ryan Garcia<\/a> in Times Square and they combined to throw only 490 punches<\/a> over 12 rounds.<\/p>\n

Also on that New York card, Devin Haney<\/a> narrowly got past Jose Ramirez, with the pair letting 503 punches fly.<\/p>\n

Those three fights are now ranked No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 on the list of 12-round bouts with the fewest punches, and in a scathing review of his fellow pugilists, Romero believes there\u2019s more<\/a> than meets the eye than just the stats.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose were two horrible, horrible [fights],\u201d he said on The Danza Project, referring to Canelo vs Scull and Haney vs Ramirez.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t even watch the Devin fight. I was warming up in the back, and I didn\u2019t want to fall asleep on the f***ing way to the ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem with these guys is they don\u2019t have the will to win, or at least to win decisively like that, because they already have fights lined up after.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re overpaying fighters and telling them, \u2018No matter what happens, whether you win or lose, you\u2019re still going to fight.\u2019 You just take away their whole will.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“These guys are just doing it for the cheque. These people, they\u2019re all fighting\u2014Canelo is included in this now too\u2014for the next cheque.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not fighting to be champion, they\u2019re not fighting to win. They\u2019re fighting for the damn cheque, and it\u2019s f***ing disgusting and destroying the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garcia had been promised a huge rematch with Haney before his defeat with Romero, as the pair\u2019s first fight was overturned when the former tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.<\/p>\n

Canelo, meanwhile, signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season in February, with the contract said to be worth in the region of around $400million.<\/p>\n

Crawford was always going to be next for Canelo; hence, Romero believes that most elite fighters are losing motivation to put on convincing performances.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe says, \u2018You\u2019re not fighting on this [promotion].\u2019 He\u2019ll give you one chance but still if you ain\u2019t fighting to win, Dana don\u2019t f**k with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

White is notoriously cutthroat in business, and although MMA<\/a> fans are nervous about him switching between the sports, those involved in boxing are excited to see what the 55-year-old can do.<\/p>\n

Back in March, White and Alalshikh announced that a deal had been reached<\/a> to begin their new ground-breaking boxing promotion.<\/p>\n

TKO Holdings, owners of the UFC and wrestling promotion,\u00a0WWE,<\/a>\u00a0are behind the new league.<\/p>\n

It is launching this year and is a historic change for the sport, as the age-old traditions continue to be challenged.<\/p>\n

The promotion will see just one champion crowned in each weight division, compared to the four main sanctioning bodies\u2014WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF\u2014currently involved in boxing.<\/p>\n
