Thanks to the medication Rapamycin, she has been able to stabilise her condition and remain active.

Harriet ran four marathons back-to-back over four consecutive days. She set off from her home city of Bristol to her husband’s Adam home city Salisbury, raising awareness and funds for LAM Action, the UK charity supporting women affected by the condition. The couple were joined on the the runs by Harriet’s best friend Lauren Weetch, and Harriet’s mother Mary Saunders in a support car behind.

Starting in Keynsham, Bristol, the trio ran through Somerset, Frome, Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster, across Salisbury Plain, before finishing outside Salisbury Cathedral on February 28, which was Rare Disease Day.

A unique feature of the challenge was that Harriet’s route tracked via GPS spelled out “LAM,” highlighting the disease and raising awareness for the charity.

Harriet said: “I successfully completed the distance of four marathons in four days and truly defying the odds of lung disease. It feels incredibly surreal. I had the most amazing support around me of my husband Adam and best friend Lauren running with me; my mum in a support car, and a physio from Wiltshire who joined us on the evenings.

Pictured are Lauren, Harriet and Adam(Image: Bristol Post)

“My husband and I spent months meticulously planning this event, going out in the depths of the winter in the horrific conditions to plan the route; checking roads and fields to ensure we could safely run down them, and to ensure spelling LAM over GPS and also ensuring our fitness and training was consistent and constantly building.”

Despite planning there were hiccups along the way, but they remained determined, as Harriet said: “The rolling hills of Somerset and Wiltshire took true grit to get through. I developed a nasty blistered on day two, which led to some extremely difficult foot pain, to the point where I felt like I was unable to continue. We also had the stress of our accommodation being cancelled on us two days before the event, leading to a stressful lead up to the event!”

Harriet added: “We climbed over 2500m of altitude over the course of the four days, with windy weather and rain, and the brutal loneliness of the Salisbury plains for 25km. Despite all of our aches and pains, having long and isolating moments on the Imber range and Salisbury Plain, and almost coming very close to pulling out of the challenge, we managed to successfully complete all 169km.

“True determination and support from donations, positive messages and kind strangers truly got us through. Incredibly proud to say I am not defined by my lung disease, and I hope I have truly put LAM on the map.

“My body and mind so much more capable than I ever imagined. Starting off on our wedding anniversary, February 25, and ending on Rare Disease Day outside Salisbury Cathedral, the success of completion was truly magnificent. Our wedding anniversary is certainly not one we will ever forget.”

Alongside the marathon challenge, they hosted a charity quiz night, with some extremely generous people offering their time to help, local companies donating raffle prizes and the venue offering the room free of charge.

Harriet said: “All of this incredible support and with the total fundraising of both events combined, we raised a staggering £10,500 for LAM Action in total. This money will be vital for the charity to support women like me and their families and to continue to contribute towards research. It’s safe to say I am exhausted but feeling very proud and grateful for all of the support I have received. Now time for a big rest!”

She is continuing to push for support and donations can be made at justgiving.com/page/harriet-saunders-3.

Harriet lives with an incurable disease (Image: Bristol Post) A Bristol woman with a rare lung condition has…

[8818
381,748,393,4884,29121,16,15
0":"post-826133","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bristol","8":"tag-bristol","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-keynsham","13":"tag-uk","14":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
