Police Scotland<\/a> has warned spiralling costs of public inquiries are hampering the fight against crime after their bill ballooned to \u00a327million.<\/p>\n

The force said without extra Scottish Government funding it is forced to absorb the costs with knock-on effects on budgets and staffing.<\/p>\n

That means fewer officers on the front line, crime prevention cutbacks and reduced capacity to tackle emerging threats.<\/p>\n

Figures show millions of pounds worth of officer time has been diverted into national inquiries, leaving fewer cops on the streets.<\/p>\n

The inquiry into the death of Sheku Bayoh after being restrained by officers in Kirkcaldy in 2015 has cost the force \u00a325.6million so far.<\/p>\n

Data shows \u00a318.3million racked up in legal fees, with \u00a35.4million on officer time and \u00a31.7million on staffing costs.<\/p>\n

Scots Tory spokesperson Sharon Dowey MSP said: \u201cYears of SNP cuts have already stretched policing to breaking point, so it\u2019s unacceptable that Police Scotland<\/a> is having to absorb huge inquiry costs at a time when they are unable to \u00adinvestigate certain crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police Scotland<\/a> said it fully supports public inquiries but added that the diversion of resources has implications for local communities and policing outcomes.<\/p>\n

A force report says: \u201cPolice Scotland<\/a> recognises that the \u2018considerable\u2019 costs associated with inquiries require tough, prioritised budget decisions, often at the expense of local policing and crime-focused activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a force report, in 2020-21 \u2013 the Bayoh inquiry was announced in November 2020 \u2013 \u201cpolice officer costs\u201d were \u00a3444,834.<\/p>\n

In subsequent years, the sums were \u00a3971,985, \u00a31,275,174, \u00a31,377,667 and \u00a31,346,682 between 2021-22 and 2024-25. Costs fell in 2025-26 to \u00a336,316 after the inquiry was paused when chair Lord Bracadale resigned over claims about impartiality.<\/p>\n

Other inquiries, including Covid-19, Scottish Hospitals Safety and Scottish Child Abuse, added another \u00a31.5million to Police<\/a> costs between April 2025 and January this year.<\/p>\n

It means the force\u2019s overall cost for inquiries exceeds \u00a327.15million.<\/p>\n
