Arguing that the nation stands at an \u2018inflexion point\u2019 in the move away from fossil-fuelled economic growth, the report\u2019s authors claim a circular, greener, and more universally generous model could help tackle unacceptable levels of poverty and inequality across Scotland.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need a rewiring of the economy, which is not just tinkering at the edges. We must embrace real reform,\u201d says the report.<\/p>\n Dubbing Scotland\u2019s economy a \u2018take-make-waste\u2019 model, the report notes that the nation\u2019s material footprint currently stands at 21.7 tonnes per person, with just 1.3% of materials reused \u2013 nowhere close to meeting sustainable levels.<\/p>\n However, the study also recognises that there is an increasing awareness of circular economy<\/a> principles, praising Scotland\u2019s \u2018strong policies\u2019 such as the Circular Economy Act, Green Industrial Strategy, and Just Transition Framework, though warns policy-makers must do more to place circular resources at the heart of economic development.<\/p>\n Moving forward, EDAS and Zero Waste Scotland<\/a> said that key industries like housing, construction, and food production should look to embed circularity to reduce waste and increase their sustainability, while also advocating for a move beyond GDP as the sole measure of success.<\/p>\n \u201cThe alignment of economic development and circularity is not a marginal concern \u2013 it is central to Scotland\u2019s future prosperity,\u201d said EDAS<\/a> chair, Neil McInroy.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need greater innovation and bolder ambition to transform our economy and move beyond the constraints of the traditional growth versus no growth debate and create a thriving, resilient society.<\/p>\n \u201cScotland has an opportunity to be a true leader in integrating circular principles into economic development.\u201d<\/p>\n![\"Financial](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FS25-Banners.jpg\")
