They finished the season averaging two points per game \u2014 before their points deduction \u2014 but have missed out to Leeds and Burnley, who both amassed <strong>ONE HUNDRED!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I always fear for a club that misses out on automatic promotion but they have had the time to mentally reset.<\/p>\n<p>They are up against a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sport\/football\/team\/1225712\/bristol-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City <\/a>side that just about clung on to their play-off spot after just one win in their last five games.<\/p>\n<p>Sheff U won 2-1 \u00a0in October at Ashton Gate but the Robins were brilliant in the March return, although they needed a late leveller.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Wilder&#8217;s Blades should edge this over two legs, despite their terrible play-off record (scroll down to see just how bad it is). A big performance from Championship player of the season Gus Hamer will be needed \u2014 but City carry a threat through Nahki Wells and Anis Mehmeti.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVENTRY v SUNDERLAND<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(First leg, Friday May 9, 8pm; Second leg Tuesday, May 13, 8pm)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/betting\/30944508\/best-online-casino-free-spins-bonuses-10-deposits\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM \u00a310 DEPOSITS (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CASINO SPECIAL &#8211; BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM \u00a310 DEPOSITS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/who\/frank-lampard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Lampard<\/a> has worked \u00a0miracles at Coventry since taking over in November.<\/p>\n<p>They were <strong>SEVENTEENTH<\/strong> when he replaced the controversially sacked Mark Robins.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Lampard tipped for England job as former Premier League manager Chris Wilder says &#8216;it just shines through&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>Nine wins out of ten from January to March fired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sport\/football\/team\/1877728\/coventry-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cov<\/a> up the table but when you have players such as Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, Ben Sheaf, Matt Grimes and the brilliant Jack Rudoni, you should be around the top positions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sport\/football\/team\/1196668\/sunderland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunderland<\/a> pretty much knew for months they were set for a play-off spot. They have lost their last five, and you just feel that not playing games with much on the line for some time makes them less battle hardened but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/who\/jobe-bellingham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jobe Bellingham<\/a> and Co will try to put that behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Cov came back from 2-0 down to nab a point at the Stadium of Light and a Wright hat-trick slayed Sunderland 3-0 in March.<\/p>\n<p>I fancy the Sky Blues to prevail over the two legs.<\/p>\n<p>LEAGUE ONELEYTON ORIENT v STOCKPORT<\/p>\n<p><strong>(First leg, Saturday May 10, 12.30pm; Second leg Wednesday, May 14, 8pm)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WHAT a cracking semi-final this could be.<\/p>\n<p>Richie Wellens\u2019 Orient won the last six while David Challinor guided Stockport to seven wins and a draw out of their last eight.<\/p>\n<p>County beat Orient 1-0 at Brisbane Road in March but the O\u2019s thumped them 4-1 in the return.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Wootton is a threat up front for the Hatters, while Charlie\u00a0Kelman has been a sensation for the O\u2019s \u00a0with 21 goals on loan from QPR. <\/p>\n<p>I have a sneaking feeling Wellens\u2019 men will get through.#<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Soccer player celebrating a goal.\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Rex\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/celebrates-scoring-teams-first-goal-988911410.jpg\" data-caption=\"Leyton Orient hot shot Charlie Kelman was League One's top scorer\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/celebrates-scoring-teams-first-goal-988911410.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>6<\/p>\n<p>Leyton Orient hot shot Charlie Kelman was League One&#8217;s top scorerCredit: RexWYCOMBE v CHARLTON<\/p>\n<p><strong>(First leg Sunday, May 11, 6.30pm; Second leg Thursday, May 15, 8pm)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THE Chairboys have been the League One upstarts and at one stage were looking at gatecrashing the automatic promotion party.<\/p>\n<p>But the wheels have come off in recent weeks, losing the final three matches \u2014 including, alarmingly, \u00a0a 4-0 \u00a0defeat to Charlton, who they face in the play-offs.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Jones\u2019 Addicks have lost just once in their last eight.<\/p>\n<p>Matty Godden has been superb, scoring 21 goals in all competitions but Wanderers have Richard Kone up top, who has also netted 21 across the board this term.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot write off Wycombe \u00a0but I fancy Charlton.<\/p>\n<p>LEAGUE TWONOTTS COUNTY v WIMBLEDON<\/p>\n<p><strong>(First leg Saturday, May 10 8pm; Second leg Saturday May 17, 12.30pm)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THIS promises to be a cracker as Johnnie Jackson has re- established Wimbledon as a real force while Stuart Maynard has done a decent job with the Magpies.<\/p>\n<p>David McGoldrick, 37, is red-hot for Notts County with 17 goals.<\/p>\n<p>But watch out for Dons\u2019 21-goal top scorer Matty Stevens, who is due a goal.<\/p>\n<p>CHESTERFIELD v WALSALL<\/p>\n<p><strong>(First leg Sunday, May 11, 3.30pm; Second leg Friday, May 16, 8pm)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WALSALL were at one point <strong>TWELVE<\/strong> points clear at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Yet they were heartbreakingly bumped out of the top three by Antoni Sarcevic\u2019s 96th-minute winner for Bradford.<\/p>\n<p>It is so hard to recover from that kind of setback in such a short space of time.<\/p>\n<p>Chesterfield are on a high after sneaking \u00a0into the final play-off spot and under wily boss Paul Cook are my tip to prevail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sheffield United's playoff history.\" height=\"960\" width=\"960\" class=\"alignnone size-thesun-article-image wp-image-34822870\" data-credit=\"\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/JB_06_05_SHEFF-U-IN-PLAY-OFFS.jpg\" data-caption=\"\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/JB_06_05_SHEFF-U-IN-PLAY-OFFS.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>6<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FOR pure footballing drama, you can&#8217;t beat the play-offs.
