what happens after Paul <\/a>\u2014 the warrior prince and chosen one \u2014 defeats the Harkonnens and becomes Emperor, embracing his role as the Fremen\u2019s messiah and initiating a holy war. He also marries Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) for political power, causing Chani to abandon him. The teaser features explosive glimpses of the galactic conflict that follows, as well as the internal battles that plague Paul.<\/p>\n\n\tThe clip opens with Paul and Chani in happier times, discussing baby names. \u201cIf we have a girl what should we name her?\u201d Chani asks. \u201cHer name should be Ghanima. She would need to be strong like her mother,\u201d Paul replies, then asks, \u201cWhat if it\u2019s a boy?\u201d Chani replies: \u201cI would name him Leto, so he would have the wisdom of his grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cDune\u201d fans will immediately recognize this bit of foreshadowing, but we won\u2019t spoil it here. Instead, let\u2019s relish the gorgeous, lens-flared footage of Zendaya walking along the dunes, while Chani is still the \u201cheartbeat\u201d of Villeneuve\u2019s story, this is \u201cDune,\u201d not \u201cUnder the Tuscan Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tPaul\u2019s angst features heavily in the teaser. \u201cWar feeds on itself,\u201d he says in voiceover. \u201cThe more I fight, the more enemies fight back. I\u2019m doing the best I can to protect my family.\u201d Here, he turns to his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), for consul. \u201cHow did father do it?\u201d Paul asks. \u201cYour father never started a war,\u201d she replies.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe teaser shows glimpses of all the major characters, including Bardem\u2019s Fremen leader Stilgar and Taylor-Joy\u2019s Alia Atreides, Paul loyal little sister, plus a first look at Pattinson as the movie\u2019s antagonist, Scytale. (Audiences have to wait to hear what Pattinson sounds like as the character, but his icy stare and shock-blonde hair foreshadow a dynamic performance to come.)<\/p>\n
\n\tThe footage ends with Paul \u2014 with a buzzed haircut \u2014 preparing for another battle. \u201cI\u2019m not afraid to die,\u201d he declares. \u201cBut I must not die yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAs part of the trailer launch event, Villeneuve and the cast sat for a Q&A, moderated by Reece Feldman, and teased what audiences can expect from the film. To add to that anticipation. Warner Bros. also released the character posters for the ensemble cast, which also features Jason Momoa (Hayt) and Isaach de Bankol\u00e9 (Farok).<\/p>\n
\n\tHere\u2019s what we learned about \u201cDune Part Three\u201d:<\/p>\n
\t\tThere\u2019s a major timeline jump.\t<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cDune: Part Three\u201d takes place \u201cmany years\u201d after the events of \u201cPart Two\u201d \u2014 17 years, to be precise.<\/p>\n
\n\tVilleneuve revealed that the threequel has a different tone, rhythm and pace, too. \u201cIf the first movie was more of a contemplation, like a boy exploring a new world, and the second one being a war movie, this one is more action-packed and tense,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\n\tPaul Atreides is \u201cdealing with the consequences of having too much power, and he is trying to figure out how to get out of this cycle of violence,\u201d he explained. \u201cAs an Emperor who can see the future, he\u2019s kind of invincible. But there are people trying to overthrow him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tDespite the intensity, Villeneuve added, Paul and Chani\u2019s love story is still the \u201cheartbeat\u201d of the film.<\/p>\n
\t\t\u201cPart 3\u201d is Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cmost personal film\u201d to date.\t<\/p>\n
\n\tVilleneuve said Herbert\u2019s \u201cDune: Messiah\u201d is his favorite in the sci-fi series, by far \u2014 \u201cIt\u2019s a very dark, beautiful book,\u201d he said \u2014 and adapting it into a film was close to his heart. Why? \u201cIt\u2019s a story about Paul and Chani and them struggling with their relationship, having the burden and incredible pressure from the world around them, and Paul is trying to find a way out of this cycle of violence,\u201d he explained. \u201cThere\u2019s something about their love, through time and the way they are, their relationship evolves.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\tWhat\u2019s next for <\/strong>the people of Arrakis?\t<\/p>\n\n\tPugh sent in a pre-recorded message asking Zendaya what Chani thinks of Irulan now, mentioning that the last time Chani was running away from her. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI want to start by saying I love Florence Pugh, so wonderful in this role,\u201d Zendaya said, explaining that she\u2019d hoped to do more scenes together after only sharing that brief glance in the previous movie. Hesitant to spoil anything, she teased: \u201cYou guys will just have to see for yourself what happens, because it\u2019s quite the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tBardem also took a moment to describe his character, Stilgar, and what audiences can expect from him. \u201cIt takes him to a place where he sees different realities of what being in power means after so long, and he\u2019s in this contradiction between the loyalty to the idea that he strongly fought and believed back in the day, and also the result of the idea becoming something that he thinks or feels that he may not be.\u201d Bardem continued, The thought that one thing one day he dreamed about sounds complicated. It\u2019s a great analogy about the idea of power and having the power, and then Stilgar is there in that contradiction.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tTaylor-Joy described Alia as having an intense blessing and curse. \u201cShe carries the weight and the wisdom of generations and generations in her head. She\u2019s never in a singular conversation. It\u2019s kind of everything everywhere, all at once. And the one thing that she really feels most strongly about is her love and devotion to her brother, because that is the only person who\u2019s ever made her feel like she makes sense.\u201d Paul is the only person who has understood her before she was even born, Taylor-Joy explained, and she will do anything for him \u2014 \u201cto various degrees of insanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tPattinson was a big fan of Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cDune\u201d movies before the opportunity came to join the cast. \u201cI absolutely adored these movies, saw them multiple times in the theater. I was talking to you on the set of \u2018The Drama,’\u201d he said, looking over to Zendaya, \u201d I was like, \u2018How do I get in one of those \u201cDune\u201d movies?\u2019 It was a very unexpected call a few months later.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\t \u201cThey\u2019re such a towering achievement by the cast,\u201d Pattinson continued. \u201cEverybody wants to work with Denis; he\u2019s a master. And when you see the scope and scale and ambition of these movies, like on set, you get why they feel like this on the screen. It\u2019s just extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAbout Scytale specifically, Pattinson said he was eager to play a character that\u2019s quite \u201cunusual\u201d in the book. \u201cYou can\u2019t really tell whose side he\u2019s on. That\u2019s kind of what makes him quite interesting, he said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say he\u2019s a conventional bad guy, as such. He might even be a good guy. Who knows? I will also find out when I see the movie. It\u2019s an extremely fun character to play and the look of it is quite extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\tDuncan Idaho is back!\t<\/p>\n
\n\tYes, Momoa\u2019s character returns for \u201cPart Three,\u201d even though the Atreides warrior died honorably in the first movie.<\/p>\n
\n\tBut now, Villeneuve teased, \u201cHe comes back just at the right moment in the story. And it\u2019s a very important comeback. Paul is struggling with his identity, and having that kind of strong Atreides figure coming back from the past will have a tremendous impact.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\tHow \u201cDune\u2019s\u201d artisans<\/strong> brought Villeneuve\u2019s vision to life.\t<\/p>\n\n\tAs previously reported, composer Hans Zimmer returns to score the film. Costume designer Jacqueline West, production designer Patrice Vermette and editor Joe Walker also returned. Linus Sandgren is the new cinematographer for \u201cPart Three,\u201d stepping in for Greig Fraser, who shot the first two movies (and won an Oscar for the first film).<\/p>\n
\n\tVilleneuve teased that the world has changed in the 17 years Paul ruled Arrakis: the desert climate itself has changed, but the action will take place on different parts of Arrakis and totally new planets as well. \u201cI wanted to approach this with a new pair of eyes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\n\tSandgren shot most of the movie on 65mm film, but \u201ca big part of it was shot on Imax film, which was a first for me,\u201d Villeneuve said. \u201cI kept the desert in digital because I like the brutality.\u201d Filming with the \u201cepic\u201d Imax cameras was unique. \u201cWhen you see the result on screen, it\u2019s quite unmatchable,\u201d he added. \u201cI hope I will have the chance to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAs for how he\u2019d like audiences to see \u201cPart Three,\u201d Villeneuve said, \u201cThe movie is really meant to be an Imax experience and to be seen on the biggest screen as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tSo, what\u2019s the status of the movie right now? Denis confirmed the film is still \u201ccooking\u201d ahead of its scheduled Dec. 18 release date. \u201cIt\u2019s going well; the movie is alive,\u201d he joked, explaining that the team is \u201cfull-speed\u201d in post-production; he\u2019s finished with the edit, but finishing the VFX takes time. <\/p>\n
