\nA milestone victory in the Race to the SunVingegaard\u2019s success in the \u201cRace to the Sun\u201d represented an important addition to his palmares. Despite his status as one of the leading Grand Tour riders of the current era, Paris-Nice<\/a> had previously proved an elusive race for the Danish climber.\u201cParis-Nice had never really suited Jonas Vingegaard<\/a>,\u201d Prudhomme explained. \u201cHe finished third two years ago behind Tadej Pogacar<\/a> and David Gaudu. Last year, he had to abandon while leading the race on the morning of a stage after a crash. He really wanted to win it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, however, the Visma rider left little doubt about the outcome. Vingegaard took two stage victories during the decisive middle part of the race and built a commanding lead in the general classification that ultimately stretched to more than four minutes over Daniel Martinez. \u201cHe did it, and he did it with style,\u201d Prudhomme added.<\/p>\n

Early signals in the Vingegaard Pogacar rivalry<\/p>\n

The victory in France arrived only days after Pogacar had delivered another statement performance of his own by winning Strade Bianche for the fourth time in his career.<\/p>\n

Those results have already begun to frame the early story of the season. While the two riders are following different programmes through the spring, their performances continue to be viewed through the lens of the rivalry that has defined recent editions of the Tour de France.<\/p>\n

Prudhomme also noted the unusual order in which Vingegaard has built his career achievements compared with many other riders. \u201cVingegaard has followed the opposite path to many riders because he first won the Tour twice before winning Paris-Nice,\u201d he said. \u201cBut yes, it means that he will undoubtedly be ready for the Tour de France, and that is excellent news.\u201d<\/p>\n

A warning ahead of July<\/p>\n

For Prudhomme, the Dane\u2019s performance across the week in France sends an unmistakable signal about what could lie ahead later in the season.<\/p>\n

Paris-Nice may not decide the Tour de France months in advance, but Vingegaard\u2019s control of the race and the margin of his overall victory reinforced the sense that the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader will once again be one of the central figures in the fight for the Maillot Jaune.<\/p>\n
