{"id":8336,"date":"2025-04-10T15:44:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/8336\/"},"modified":"2025-04-10T15:44:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:44:09","slug":"in-vietnam-spanish-premier-says-eu-is-seeking-new-trade-partners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/8336\/","title":{"rendered":"In Vietnam, Spanish premier says EU is seeking new trade partners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>OVIEDO, Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Thursday that the EU is working to expand its open trade policy by seeking new partners.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during an official visit to Vietnam, Sanchez emphasized the bloc\u2019s trade agreements with South American nations and Mexico, as well as ongoing negotiations with India and other Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Europe\u2019s roadmap. And now, we\u2019re not only going to stick with it \u2014 we\u2019re going to expand it with more openness, more cooperation, new partners and a firm commitment to multilateralism,\u201d he said at the first-ever Vietnam-Spain business summit.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez also welcomed US President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to pause some tariffs, measures which he described as \u201cunjustified and unfair.\u201d He also called the original 46% tariffs on Vietnamese goods \u201cchilling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis pause is a door to negotiation and agreement between nations,\u201d Sanchez said.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came ahead of a visit to China, where he will become the first EU leader to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping since Trump\u2019s latest round of tariff measures.<\/p>\n<p>The visit has drawn criticism from Washington. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Spain\u2019s push for closer EU-China ties would be akin to \u201ccutting your own throat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrade isn\u2019t a zero-sum game,&#8221; Sanchez said Thursday. &#8220;If one side wins, the other can win too. That\u2019s how we see it.
