Though virtually no one identified as Catholic in the Protestant Nordics or Orthodox Greece and Bulgaria, they represented up to 70 percent of respondents in Italy; 80 percent in Portugal, Croatia and Lithuania; and over 90 percent in Poland.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Europe\u2019s broad and historically rooted Catholic machine also dwarfs that of other continents, with far more priests than any other continent, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/stats\/75542-VATICAN_CATHOLIC_CHURCH_STATISTICS_2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 statistical update the Catholic Church<\/a> published last year.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Zooming out to the world stage, however, Europe stands out as a continent on the wane.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the number of Catholics increased in four out of five continents. \u201cOnly in Europe there is a decrease,\u201d the church\u2019s statistical update said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a remarkable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerknet.be\/sites\/default\/files\/20250416_catechumenen_def_public.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uptick in the number of adult baptisms <\/a>in Belgium and <a href=\"https:\/\/eglise.catholique.fr\/approfondir-sa-foi\/la-celebration-de-la-foi\/les-sacrements\/le-bapteme\/baptemes-adultes\/#adultes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a>, the countries have also registered <a href=\"https:\/\/eglise.catholique.fr\/guide-eglise-catholique-france\/statistiques-de-leglise-catholique-france-monde\/statistiques-de-leglise-catholique-france\/les-sacrements-en-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major decreases<\/a> in overall baptism numbers over the past decades. Countries like Belgium and Germany have also seen a  significant number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbk.de\/fileadmin\/redaktion\/diverse_downloads\/presse_2024\/2024-110a-Kirchenstatistik-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requests to be removed from the baptism register<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During this conclave, Europe will have three times as many voting cardinals than Africa. But while one-fifth of the world\u2019s Catholics were in Europe, Africa housed almost as many, and it had the largest growing Catholic population thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/262883\/worldwide-catholic-population-hits-14-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Catholics represent just a tiny share of Asia\u2019s population, but they make up 11 percent of  the global Catholic population and the church also registered growing numbers there.<\/p>\n<p>The Americas stand out as the most Catholic of all. The continents are home to about half of the world\u2019s Catholic population, buoyed by Brazil.
