In 2022, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/knowsley\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Knowsley<\/a> Council completed the \u00a31.3m purchase of <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/prescot\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Prescot<\/a> Shopping Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was <a aria-label=\"revealed in SeptemberLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/supermarket-set-demolition-town-landmark-32451981\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">revealed in September<\/a> last year how the \u201coutdated and underused\u201d areas of the site were being demolished while the former Stephenson Print building has already been flattened. These works form part of a wider regeneration scheme for Prescot as <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/knowsley-council\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Knowsley Council<\/a> aims to \u201crevitalise\u201d the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Now more than half a million pounds of Liverpool City Region Combined Authority funding is being used to enable the next stage of the scheme. This could include further demolition work to make the site more financially sustainable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Work began in the old Somerfield supermarket to make it ready for future development last September. Cabinet members endorsed a proposal to accept \u00a3600,000 from the city region\u2019s regeneration capacity building fund to draw up plans for a reimagined shopping centre site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Cllr Tony Brennan, cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said the funding would take the council\u2019s ambitions for Prescot Shopping Centre to the next stage. He added how the authority\u2019s decision to buy the centre had been \u201cbold\u201d after \u201cyears of private ownership and under investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Cllr Brennan said the first phase of demolition of the site had been completed alongside urgent maintenance and repair works. He said the redevelopment of the centre would bring a \u201cnew confidence\u201d to Prescot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The cabinet member said in its previous state, the centre did not meet the expectations of residents and business and was not deemed \u201cfinancially viable to maintain.\u201d Further consultation will now move forward with a view to progression towards a formal planning application.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Prescot shopping centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/JS86309379.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Prescot shopping centre\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Prescot shopping centre<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">As part of this, the centre will include a new library, museum and cultural offer, alongside an increased capacity in the car park.
