{"id":83516,"date":"2025-05-08T03:09:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T03:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/83516\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T03:09:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T03:09:31","slug":"john-swinney-trying-to-make-holyrood-election-about-bogeyman-nigel-farage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/83516\/","title":{"rendered":"John Swinney trying to make Holyrood election about &#8216;bogeyman&#8217; Nigel Farage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anas Sarwar used a speech to tell Scots they faced a &#8220;stark choice&#8221; between Labour and the SNP at next year&#8217;s Holyrood election.<\/p>\n<p>13:37, 07 May 2025Updated 14:57, 07 May 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2_Nigel-Farages-Victory-Lap-Of-England-As-Reform-Wins-Big-In-Local-Elections.jpg\" alt=\"Reform won a series of local election victories across England last week\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Reform won a series of local election victories across England last week(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">John Swinney is &#8220;recklessly&#8221; talking up <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/john-swinney-warns-high-chance-35068784\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigel Farage&#8217;s electoral prospects<\/a> to deflect attention from the SNP&#8217;s record in Government, Anas Sarwar has claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/anas-sarwar-says-snp-failure-35092972\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Labour leader<\/a> used a speech in Glasgow today to mark one year until the next Holyrood election to warn Scots faced a &#8220;stark choice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sarwar insisted voters had to decide whether to allow the SNP <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/john-swinney-dictating-political-narrative-35179961\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">a third decade in power<\/a> in Edinburgh or support a &#8220;change in direction&#8221; under his party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Scottish Labour currently trails the Nationalists in polls with many Scots distinctly unimpressed with the performance Keir Starmer&#8217;s Government at Westminster so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And a survey out today by True North Advisors suggested Reform UK could even leapfrog Labour into second place at the 2026 election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But Sarwar said the Holyrood poll should be about who could deliver the reforms necessary to revive Scotland&#8217;s struggling public services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And he took aim at the SNP leader over his recent habit of warning about the rise of Reform UK and the prospect of Farage becoming the next Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Labour leader said: &#8220;You already know what John Swinney wants to make this election about. He&#8217;s the one who broke our NHS, so it&#8217;s no wonder he doesn&#8217;t want to talk about our health service. He&#8217;s the man who oversaw our falling standards in our schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Instead of talking about his own failures, John Swinney will recklessly talk up Farage. Nigel Farage is John Swinney&#8217;s newcomer to replace the Tories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The truth is, I don&#8217;t care about Nigel Farage, and Nigel Farage doesn&#8217;t care about Scotland. The 2026 election is about whether we continue to have a government that serves itself with the SNP, or a government in service of the people of Scotland with Labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;In one year&#8217;s time, Scotland is going to have to make a choice. Do we carry on with a third decade of the SNP in charge, or do we change direction?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Do we view our Scottish Parliament, our Scottish Government, as the SNP do, as a vehicle for protest? Or do we view it, as I do, as a vehicle to change people&#8217;s lives?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The Scottish Government has immense power to change lives.
