Although its retail sector is known for stability and operational discipline, at the checkout in Germany, significant changes are underway, says Jean-Philippe Niedergang, acting group CEO \/ EMEA-PACIFIC-LATAM CEO, Castles Technology.<\/p>\n

Rising labour costs, stricter regulation, and rapidly evolving payment habits are pushing retailers to rethink how transactions are handled in-store. According to Castles Technology\u2019s new report, Germany at the Checkout: POS Outlook 2026, these pressures are accelerating investment in new POS technologies across the country.<\/p>\n

Here are five key trends shaping the German checkout experience.<\/p>\n

  1. Cash is declining, but choice still matters<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Cash remains important in Germany, but its share of retail revenue is falling. Today, cash accounts for around 35% of merchant revenue, while card payments represent 38% and are expected to reach 42% within five years.<\/p>\n

    Consumers are not abandoning cash entirely, but they increasingly expect multiple payment options. Contactless now represents more than 80% of card transactions, and mobile wallets account for over 12% of cashless payments.<\/p>\n

    • Self-checkout is scaling rapidly<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Retailers are under pressure to increase throughput while managing labour shortages and rising costs. As a result, self-service checkouts are expanding quickly.<\/p>\n

      The number of installations more than doubled between 2023 and 2025, and one in every 18 checkouts is now self-service.<\/p>\n

      Consumer adoption is also strong. Around 67% of German shoppers say they use self-checkout when it is available, mainly to avoid queues.<\/p>\n

      • Mobile POS is outpacing traditional systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Although fixed POS terminals still represent the majority of revenue, mobile and portable devices are growing much faster.<\/p>\n

        Germany\u2019s mPOS market, valued at USD 0.9 billion in 2024, is projected to reach USD 2.8 billion by 2033, with a CAGR of 16.6%.<\/p>\n

        This growth is being driven by contactless payments, cloud-based software, and the adoption of Android-based devices.<\/p>\n

          Germany\u2019s regulatory environment is accelerating POS modernisation. Key changes include:<\/p>\n

          • PCI DSS v4.0 implementation<\/li>\n
          • The EU Accessibility Act<\/li>\n
          • New digital tax reporting mandates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            As a result, around 80% of German retailers plan checkout hardware changes within two years, and 50% expect to replace POS software.<\/p>\n

            • Retailers are prioritising reliability over disruption<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Unlike some markets, German retailers are not chasing rapid transformation. Instead, they are investing in solutions that are:<\/p>\n

              • Built for long lifecycles<\/li>\n
              • Aligned with operational realities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                The report describes this as a \u201cdeliberate recalibration\u201d rather than dramatic disruption.<\/p>\n

                Germany\u2019s checkout is evolving, but in a characteristically pragmatic way. Retailers are modernising POS infrastructure to support contactless payments, self-service, and omnichannel retail, while maintaining reliability and compliance.<\/p>\n
