{"id":83626,"date":"2025-05-08T04:06:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T04:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/83626\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T04:06:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T04:06:13","slug":"authors-anger-as-waterstones-in-canterbury-refuses-to-stock-new-book-on-kent-artist-john-ward-who-gave-lessons-to-king-charles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/83626\/","title":{"rendered":"Author\u2019s anger as Waterstones in Canterbury refuses to stock new book on Kent artist John Ward, who gave lessons to King Charles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The author of a biography of one of Britain\u2019s most distinguished portrait painters is furious that Waterstones has refused to stock it.<\/p>\n<p>Documentary maker and writer Peter Williams says the snub is an insult to the illustrious career of Kent artist John Ward, who even gave drawing lessons to the future King Charles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 3024 3266\" alt=\"Peter Williams with his new biography of distinguished Kent artist John Ward\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"FR57E8SZUDKD0VBXOQTW.jpg\" data-ar=\"0.93\"\/>Peter Williams with his new biography of distinguished Kent artist John Ward<\/p>\n<p>But bosses of the national bookstore chain believe there would be \u201cinsufficient demand\u201d for the hardback, called John Ward: \u201cA Delightful Nonsense\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Williams told KentOnline: \u201cI find it extraordinary that Waterstones, especially in Canterbury, will not stock a book about the life of one of the city\u2019s most significant and talented characters.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ward, who painted portraits of members of the Royal family, lived at Bilting near Ashford.<\/p>\n<p>His work is exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery as well as the Beaney Art Gallery in Canterbury.<\/p>\n<p>He served in the Royal Engineers in the Second World War and used his drawing skills to design pillboxes in Kent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1456 900\" alt=\"Waterstones in Canterbury city centre\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"PRUGCV2QCNEEVQYB6VRW.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.62\"\/>Waterstones in Canterbury city centre<\/p>\n<p>A past member of the Royal Academy, Mr Ward was given Freedom of the City of Canterbury and made a CBE in 1985 for his contribution to the arts. He died in 2007, aged 89.<\/p>\n<p>Among the subjects for his portraits were Princess Anne, plus Prince William and Prince Harry at their christenings.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Williams\u2019 biography is the first detailed study of his life and is supported by the Ward family.<\/p>\n<p>But the author was shocked and disappointed to receive the rejection from Waterstones, which came in an email exchange with a senior manager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said that previous books featuring Ward had not sold well,\u201d Mr Williams said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1719 1278\" alt=\"Artist John Ward in his studio.
