{"id":836352,"date":"2026-03-19T14:03:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T14:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/836352\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T14:03:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T14:03:21","slug":"studio-dera-adds-sculptural-extension-to-mozart-house-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/836352\/","title":{"rendered":"Studio Dera adds sculptural extension to Mozart House in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Full-height windows framed by sculptural panels of glass-reinforced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/concrete\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concrete<\/a> overlook two stacked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/courtyards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">courtyards<\/a> at Mozart House, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london-houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London home<\/a> extended by local practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studio-dera\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Dera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the Belgravia Conservation Area, the Georgian terraced home is famous for being both the site where Mozart composed his first symphony at eight years old and later as the home of author Vita Sackville-West and politician Harold Nicolson.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307152 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/studio-dera-mozart-house-extension-london-extensions-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of the Mozart House in London\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Studio Dera has extended a Georgian terraced home in London<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studiodera.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Dera<\/a> was asked to create additional living space for the client, expanding an existing one-bedroom extension at the end of the home&#8217;s garden.<\/p>\n<p>This included transforming the volume of a former basement pool into an additional bedroom, excavating further to create a small lounge overlooking a sunken courtyard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/studio-dera-mozart-house-extension-london-extensions-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Courtyard view at London house extensions by Studio DERA\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Glass-reinforced concrete panels frame full-height windows<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The deep rear garden gave us the opportunity to think of the project as part of the landscape, rather than as a conventional extension,&#8221; Studio Dera co-founder Marcel Rahm told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Matching the volume of the former pool for the extension allowed us to get bold and creative with the extension while still allowing the Georgian house to retain its presence,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307146 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/studio-dera-mozart-house-extension-london-extensions-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"View of concrete home renovation by Studio Dera\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The interiors overlook two stacked courtyards<\/p>\n<p>Studio Dera described the layout of the home, moving from the living area of the main home into a glazed link corridor that runs along the edge of the garden, as an &#8220;episodic journey&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Full-height sliding doors open onto an upper courtyard, with a staircase leading down into the lower courtyard. This sunken space sits adjacent to the ne lounge space and the dining room within the original home opposite.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/16\/pinzauer-maresfield-gardens-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pinzauer-maresfield-gardens-extension-london-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Maresfield Gardens by Pinzauer\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Pinzauer transforms historic Hampstead home with concrete-framed pavilion\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Above the excavated area, the ground-floor bedroom volume was designed to feel like a garden pavilion, with a narrow, deep-set frame surrounding a large set of sliding glass doors that link it directly to the courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were interested in the new work feeling like an extension of the domestic garden landscape, at moments almost becoming a landscape itself,&#8221; said Rahm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307142 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/studio-dera-mozart-house-extension-london-extensions-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Living space interior at Mozart House in London\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A second bedroom and lounge space were added to the home<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The excavation grounds the project in the site, and the lighter pavilion elements bring openness and repose,&#8221; Rahm added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sculptural glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) intervention \u2013 particularly the light pavilion of the new bedroom at the rear \u2013 helps balance the weight of excavation with a more delicate architectural presence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307161 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/studio-dera-mozart-house-extension-london-extensions-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_20-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Wood-lined interior of Mozart House by Studio Dera\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The home&#8217;s layout is described as an &#8220;episodic journey&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both courtyards are paved, with large round planters potted with trees and shrubs.
