{"id":837726,"date":"2026-03-20T05:23:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T05:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/837726\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T05:23:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T05:23:15","slug":"openai-is-acquiring-open-source-python-tool-maker-astral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/837726\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI is acquiring open source Python tool-maker Astral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OpenAI announced Thursday that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Astral, the company behind popular open source Python development tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/astral-sh\/uv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uv<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/astral-sh\/ruff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruff<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/astral-sh\/ty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ty<\/a>, and integrate the company into its Codex team.<\/p>\n<p>The deal, whose financial terms were not publicly disclosed, will help OpenAI \u201caccelerate our work on Codex and expand what AI can do across the software development lifecycle,\u201d the company <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/openai-to-acquire-astral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in an announcement post<\/a>. Integrating Astral\u2019s tools more closely with Codex after the acquisition will \u201cenable AI agents to work more directly with the tools developers already rely on every day,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n<p>Astral\u2019s most popular open source projects include:<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Marsh, who <a href=\"https:\/\/astral.sh\/blog\/announcing-astral-the-company-behind-ruff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founded Astral three years ago<\/a> with $4 million in seed funding, promised in <a href=\"https:\/\/astral.sh\/blog\/openai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a blog post Thursday<\/a> that OpenAI \u201cwill continue supporting our open source tools after the deal closes. We\u2019ll keep building in the open, alongside our community \u2013 and for the broader Python ecosystem \u2013 just as we have from the start.\u201d OpenAI echoed that, following the close of the acquisition, saying it will \u201ccontinue to support these open source projects while exploring ways they can work more seamlessly with Codex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI\u2019s move comes amid an <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/ai\/2026\/02\/openai-picks-up-pace-against-claude-code-with-new-codex-desktop-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intense battle<\/a> between <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/ai\/2026\/02\/with-gpt-5-3-codex-openai-pitches-codex-for-more-than-just-writing-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Codex<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tag\/claude-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthropic\u2019s Claude Code<\/a> for dominance in the fast-growing market for AI-powered coding assistants.
