{"id":839452,"date":"2026-03-20T23:27:30","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T23:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/839452\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T23:27:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T23:27:30","slug":"denis-villeneuve-had-a-new-imax-lens-hand-crafted-for-dune-part-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/839452\/","title":{"rendered":"Denis Villeneuve Had a New Imax Lens Hand-Crafted for Dune: Part Three"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/dune-part-three\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dune-part-three_1\" data-tag=\"dune-part-three\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dune: Part Three<\/a>, director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/denis-villeneuve\/\" id=\"auto-tag_denis-villeneuve_1\" data-tag=\"denis-villeneuve\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denis Villeneuve<\/a> had lensmaker Atlas Lens hand-craft a custom spherical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/imax\/\" id=\"auto-tag_imax_1\" data-tag=\"imax\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Imax<\/a> lens designed specifically for the aesthetics of the sci-fi franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe custom lenses were designed to capture Villeneuve\u2019s specific visual style for the Dune films, particularly the signature flares and optical characteristics typically for scenes on the desert planet Arrakis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAtlas developed the lenses in close partnership with director Villeneuve and Dune: Part Three cinematographer Linus Sandgren. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI envisioned lenses that could create specific optical characteristics, particularly the flares, that would be unique to this film,\u201d said Sandgren. \u201cAtlas rose to an incredible challenge, designing and hand-crafting these IMAX lenses in remarkable time. Their team worked around the clock to bring our vision to life, and the results are truly astonishing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBased on Sandgren and Villeneuve\u2019s vision, Atlas used \u201cnew design techniques and coating methods to cater specifically to the IMAX format,\u201d said Forrest Schultz, president, co-founder and Lead designer at Atlas Lens. \u201cOur team met the challenge by expanding our machining capabilities, developing in-house coating equipment, and refining our build and calibration processes to meet the demands of the IMAX experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVilleneuve said the custom lenses \u201callowed us to capture the essence of Arrakis in a way that was unique to this movie,\u201d praising Atlas\u2019 \u201cdedication and craftsmanship [which] helped us bring another level of beauty and poetry to the screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Dune-3-posters-publicity-H-2026.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"730\" width=\"1296\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tTimoth\u00e9e Chalamet and Robert Pattinson in the posters for \u2018Dune: Part Three.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWarner Bros.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAtlas will showcase the new lenses at the upcoming Pacific Northwest Lens Summit in Portland (Mar. 20-21).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe first Dune (2021) won six Oscars, including best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/cinematography\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cinematography_1\" data-tag=\"cinematography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cinematography<\/a> for cameraman Greig Fraser, who used a combination of Panavision spherical and anamorphic lenses, as well as a Zeiss Super Speeds lens for specific dream sequences. For Dune: Part Two (2024), Fraser used only spherical, not anamorphic lenses, but dirtied up the image with a series of vintage and specialized lenses, including a rehoused Soviet-era Helios 44, and 1980s Moviecams. Dune: Part Two received five Oscar nominations, including for best picture and best cinematography, and won Academy Awards for best sound and best visual effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAll three films were made under the Filmed For Imax program, an exclusive partnership that gives select directors access to Imax\u2019s proprietary technology throughout the production process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDirected by Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan, Dune: Part Three is based on Frank Herbert\u2019s novel Dune Messiah and set up as the epic conclusion to Villeneuve\u2019s trilogy. The film stars Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, and Isaach De Bankol\u00e9, with Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVilleneuve and the cast unveiled the first Dune: Part Three trailer at a launch event on Monday at AMC Century City. Describing the first Dune film as a \u201ccontemplation, a boy exploring a new world,\u201d and the second as \u201ca war movie,\u201d Villeneuve said the concluding film in the trilogy \u201cis a thriller. It is action-packed and tense.
