It was a full-circle moment. Years ago, Rook sat in those classrooms as a student struggling with reading, writing, math, and especially speech. Now, he returns as a mentor and local business owner, sharing insights about confidence, discipline, and perseverance.

“When I was a student at Weems, I struggled in reading, writing, and math, but mostly I struggled with speech,” Rook said. “I couldn’t even pronounce my own name. The T and R sounds were a challenge.”

Rook also shared that he grew up with ADHD and remembers having a lot of energy as a child.

“The teachers at Weems helped me early in life,” he said. “I credit them as the start of my career and success. My life would not be possible without them.”

During his Career Day presentation, Rook spoke openly about those challenges, encouraging students to stay disciplined and listen to the teachers who are guiding them.

“I reminded them that even I made mistakes,” he said. “If you keep practicing with daily discipline and respect for your teachers and classmates, you will become successful too.”

Building Confidence Through Movement

Today, Rook is the founder of Family Legacy Fitness & Martial Arts, located inside Manassas Mall. His academy focuses on helping young people develop confidence, resilience, and leadership skills through martial arts and fitness.

“If you could hire a success coach for your child to build confidence, resilience, courage, focus, and daily discipline, that’s exactly what training at Family Legacy Fitness & Martial Arts feels like,” Rook explained.

Classes combine physical training with lessons that build mindset and emotional control.

“The energy of fitness challenges and martial arts keeps kids fully engaged,” he said. “Every class strengthens mindset, emotional control, and positive habits for school and life.”

Rook says the goal is not simply teaching martial arts techniques.

“We go beyond the average martial arts or self-defense school by developing character first—movement is the vehicle, leadership the outcome,” he said. “Families don’t just train here. They grow stronger together.”

Lessons That Go Beyond the Gym

During his Career Day visit, Rook did not just speak to the students; he also engaged them in conversation. He invited them to participate through interactive exercises that connected movement with life lessons.

He teaches students three simple rules for concentration. “Focus your eyes, mind, and body,” Rook said.

He also encourages students to build confidence by making eye contact, speaking up for themselves, and working through challenges step by step.

Respect and honesty are key parts of the lesson as well.

“Respect means listening to your teachers and parents the first time with a good attitude and your best effort,” he said. “Honesty means being honest with yourself so you can recognize your mistakes and grow through practice.”

Each lesson is paired with a physical activity to reinforce the idea.

Continuing to Inspire Local Students

The visit to Weems Elementary is only the beginning. Rook plans to visit approximately ten more schools across Prince William County this spring as part of Career Day programs.

His goal is simple.

“I hope the students take away motivation to challenge themselves and never give up,” he said.

For the former Weems student who once struggled to pronounce his own name, returning to the school to inspire others is a powerful reminder that growth often begins with small steps and encouragement from those who believe in you.

Enjoy this story?
