Apple<\/a> flew up to 1,500,000 iPhones<\/a> to the US<\/a> in an attempt to beat Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s tariffs that could more than triple the price<\/a> of each device.<\/p>\n Currently, 80% of iPhones are manufactured in China, which Trump has just hit with a 125% tariff<\/a> for imports into the US.<\/p>\n With devices at risk of surging in price, the tech company has chartered at least six cargo jets, carrying 100 tons of iPhones each, from India to the USA since March.<\/p>\n Rather than taking 30 hours to pass customs in Chennai airport, Apple has convinced authorities to process exports in just six.<\/p>\n It\u2019s testament to how little time is on hand, and how much money is at stake when Trump\u2019s tariffs on the main manufacturer of iPhones \u2013 China \u2013 could hike the price of each device higher than \u00a32,700<\/a>.<\/p>\n China has hit US imports with an 84% tariff in retaliation for a 125% rate Trump whacked on imports from China this week.<\/p>\n Both countries have been caught in an escalating tit-for-tat since Trump increased tariffs on almost every country on what he dubbed \u2018Liberation Day\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t This emerging trade war<\/a> has threatened the supply lines of companies like tech giant Apple, which manufactures 80% of iPhones in China.<\/p>\n But Apple found a workaround \u2013 India, where currently only one in 10 iPhones are made.<\/p>\n Already hit by a much lower tariff of 26%, India\u2019s rate was slashed to 10% when Trump announced a 90-day pause in the tariff hikes on Wednesday.<\/p>\n That means it\u2019s far cheaper to produce goods India for export to the US instead of doing it in China, which Trump excluded for \u2018the lack of respect that China has shown to the World\u2019s Markets\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018Do not retaliate and you will be rewarded\u2019, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said outside the White House.<\/p>\n \t\t The pause was declared after 75 countries approached the US for trade negotiations, Trump said.<\/p>\n But there is no guarantee the 90-day pause will last for 90 days \u2013 Trump had dismissed news of the plans as \u2018fake news\u2019 only a day before.<\/p>\n China\u00a0does not appear interested in bargaining, as some other countries have started doing.<\/p>\n Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian saying: \u2018If the US truly wants to resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation, it should adopt an attitude of equality, respect and mutual benefit.\u2019<\/p>\n Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk<\/a>.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n For more stories like this, <\/strong>check our news page<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Arrow Arrow![\"METRO](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_247001404-c3e3.jpg\")
