{"id":84036,"date":"2025-05-08T07:40:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T07:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/84036\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T07:40:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T07:40:16","slug":"ve-day-80-edinburgh-commemorates-80th-anniversary-with-poignant-scotlands-salute-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/84036\/","title":{"rendered":"VE Day 80: Edinburgh commemorates 80th anniversary with &#8216;poignant&#8217; Scotland\u2019s Salute concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A poignant evening filled with the sound of military pipes and drums paid tribute with &#8220;Scotland\u2019s Salute&#8221; to the national heroes who witnessed the guns fall silent in May 1945.<\/p>\n<p>A concert collaboration between Poppy Scotland and Legion Scotland promised a programme of &#8220;stirring music benefitting the strength and resilience of the wartime generation&#8221; to honour the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>GB News was invited behind the scenes at the final dress rehearsal before the big performance at the historic Usher Hall in Edinburgh last night (Tuesday, May 6).<\/p>\n<p>The bands of His Majesty\u2019s Royal Marines and the Royal Regiment of Scotland added the final touches to Scotland\u2019s primary contribution to the 80th anniversary calendar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"30f97\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"e19c24c98a47bc167bd6e082157cb116\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201600%20900'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1746690014_877_image.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A poignant evening filled with the sound of military pipes and drums paid tribute with &#8220;Scotland\u2019s Salute&#8221; to the national heroes who witnessed the guns fall silent in May 1945<\/p>\n<p>GB News<\/p>\n<p>Rousing military ensembles for brass, pipes and drums were joined by Scottish Symphony Orchestra Violinist Iona McDonald, singer songwriter Cammy Barnes and singer Amy Hawthorn.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Servicemen and women were honoured during the national remembrance concert, where the audience heard some memorable and fascinating wartime tales.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the performance, Poppy Scotland incorporated conversations and moving testimonies, including that of Cath Dummond, who recalled receiving a telegram in August 1944 informing her that her husband of just 10 months had died in a plane crash.<\/p>\n<p>She was eight months pregnant and feared the struggles as a single mother.<\/p>\n<p>Cath said: \u201cI remember that telegram arriving like it was yesterday. I screamed the place down. I was absolutely heartbroken and didn\u2019t see how I would get through it. It was a real sense of fear raising a child alone, with no money or help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On VE Day, 1945, Margaret Landels remembers hearing that the war had ended and everyone going out to celebrate. She said: \u201cSome people had a band, and we had a dance along South Queensferry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She had signed up to the Royal Navy in Edinburgh after being moved into action upon seeing a \u201cWe Need You!\u201d poster.<\/p>\n<p>The Scotland\u2019s Salute: VE80 commemorative event in Edinburgh aimed to rekindle the tsunami of relief that swept over Europe on May 8, 1945.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Executive of Legion Scotland, Dr Claire Armstrong, OBE, who oversaw the dress rehearsal, said prior to the show that the audience was in for a real treat.<\/p>\n<p>Before the show kicked off, she told GB News: \u201cWe want to take them on a journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to go through the build up to that announcement that the war was finally over, take them through the celebrations and just to experience with everybody what it must have felt like 80 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll hear the personal stories from our veterans and we\u2019ll end with the remembrance piece &#8211; to honour the occasion<\/p>\n<p>GB News<\/p>\n<p>Singer-songwriter Cammy Barnes, Britain\u2019s Got Talent semi-finalist closed out the show,  with the Scotland\u2019s Salute while realising a new single just days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was \u201cmore excited than nervous\u201d, but admitted \u201cthere\u2019s a teeny wee bit of pressure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy papa was a big military man,\u201d he told GB News, \u201cand he would have loved to have seen it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got my dad into the army and my dad plays the bagpipes in the Queen\u2019s Own Highlanders, previously the Cameron Highlanders, which is why I\u2019m called Cameron,&#8221; Barnes said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I thought doing the Tattoo was going to be the coolest show I\u2019ve ever done, but I think tonight might actually top it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scotland\u2019s Salute was in a similar vein to the D-Day 80th concert held at Usher Hall in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>But while D-Day was tinged with anticipation, fear and concern for parachute regiments and all allied forces aboard the landing crafts, May 8, 1945 was a global celebration filled with relief, jubilation and community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A poignant evening filled with the sound of military pipes and drums paid tribute with &#8220;Scotland\u2019s Salute&#8221;
