{"id":841837,"date":"2026-03-22T01:41:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T01:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/841837\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T01:41:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T01:41:14","slug":"tina-feys-snl-uk-monologue-crashed-by-nicola-coughlan-michael-cera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/841837\/","title":{"rendered":"Tina Fey&#8217;s SNL UK Monologue Crashed by Nicola Coughlan, Michael Cera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tina-fey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tina-fey\" data-tag=\"tina-fey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TIna Fey<\/a> has made TV history, delivering the opening monologue on the debut episode of \u201cSNL U.K.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs she herself noted on Saturday\u2019s inaugural show, she was now \u201cthe youngest person ever to host \u2018SNL U.K.\u2019,\u201d to cheers from the live audience. \u201cHere in the U.K., you might know me as the teacher from \u2018Mean Girls,\u2019 or you might remember a long time ago when I played Sarah Palin on \u2018SNL\u2019 U.S., or maybe you feel like you recognize me as the lady from the show \u2018Veep,\u2019 and that\u2019s fine too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFey then dipped a comedic toe into current political waters when she looked to answer \u201cwhy do a U.K. version\u201d of \u201cSNL\u201d?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWell, like so many large scale American operations these days, no one really knows why,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was then up to a series of celebrity guests to crash Fey\u2019s monologue, including Nicola Coughlan, Michael Cera and Graham Norton. Asked by Coughlan why an American was hosting the debut \u201cSNL U.K.\u201d rather than a Brit, Fey said that it was valid question. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe way it was explained to me was that for this first episode, anyway, how do I put this politely, none of you fuckers would do it. Does that make sense?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFey also managed to showcase an impressive knowledge of British comedy in front of Norton, delivering lines from a series of shows such as \u201cKeeping Up Appearance,\u201d \u201cFawlty Towers,\u201d \u201cAre You Being Served,\u201d \u201cMonty Python,\u201d \u201cEastenders\u201d and even several recent adverts (notably the much-memed \u201cJet 2 Holidays\u201d voiceover).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFey\u2019s casting as the solitary American in the inaugural episode of the first British \u201cSNL\u201d no doubt weighed heavily on both her status as one of Hollywood\u2019s most powerful comedy icons and her legendary connection with the show on home soil. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFirst joining as a writer in the 1997, she would soon become \u201cSNL\u2019s\u201d first female lead writer and by 2000 was performing in sketches, also joining Jimmy Fallon as co-anchors of the \u201cWeekend Update\u201d segment. Before she left after the 2005-2006 to develop \u201c30 Rock,\u201d Fey had become the longest-serving \u201cWeekend Update\u201d anchor, credited with reviving both the segment and the show. Since then, Fey has made numerous guest appearances on \u201cSNL,\u201d most notably for her impersonation of former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFey\u2019s status as \u201cSNL U.K.\u2019s\u201d youngest host will sadly only last a week.
