{"id":845811,"date":"2026-03-23T22:25:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T22:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/845811\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T22:25:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T22:25:34","slug":"holidaymakers-face-billion-pound-tax-on-great-british-holiday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/845811\/","title":{"rendered":"Holidaymakers face billion-pound tax on \u2018great British holiday\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tMonday 23 March 2026 12:27 pm\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Untitled-design-27.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Breaking news illustration with abstract design, vibrant colors, and dynamic shapes conveying a sense of urgency and impor...\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tThe tax would be charged to domestic and international holidaymakers\t<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cgreat British holiday\u201d is under threat from a proposed tax which would hit visitors with \u00a31.6bn in new charges and threaten 33,000 jobs, hospitality bosses have warned.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s holiday economy could be \u201cdecimated\u201d by a levy on tourist accommodation which would turn away domestic and international holidaymakers, according to new modelling.<\/p>\n<p>Industry body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/people-and-organizations\/ukhospitality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">UKHospitality<\/a> is urging the government to reverse course on the tax, which would allow mayors in England to impose a charge on international and domestic visitors\u2019 stays in hotels, hotels and bed-and-breakfasts.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/overnight-visitor-levy-in-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">consultation<\/a> on the levy closed in February, and ministers say revenue from the tax could be used by mayors to invest in local infrastructure and regeneration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Individual mayors would be able to decide whether to impose a tourist tax in their area, if the plans are progressed by government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A five per cent levy on accommodation would cost tourists \u00a31.6bn by the fifth year of its existence, according to modelling by consultancy Oxford Economics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tax would slash GDP by \u00a32.2bn and starve the country\u2019s hospitality industry of \u00a31.8bn in tourist spend, as visitors opt to spend 11.9m fewer nights in hotels and other accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>The levy would cause the country\u2019s tourism industry to shrink in response to lower custom, Oxford Economics claims, with \u00a3101m less direct investment and 33,000 lost jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/political-comfort-blanket-masquerading-as-a-growth-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Political comfort blanket masquerading as a growth strategy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other models of a potential tax were forecast to be less damaging, with a \u00a32 levy per person per night hitting GDP by \u00a31bn and causing 16,000 lost jobs.<\/p>\n<p>A \u00a32 tax per room per night would have the least impact on the hospitality industry, the consultancy claims, causing a \u00a3500m loss in GDP and 7,000 fewer jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Tourist tax would \u2018decimate\u2019 holidaymaking<\/p>\n<p>Allen Simpson, chief executive of UKHospitality, claimed these figures show a holiday tax would \u201cdecimate\u201d foreign tourism and domestic holidays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no winners from a holiday tax. From coastal communities and city centres to local guesthouses, pubs and taxi firms, the impacts are stark and indiscriminate. Taxes up, jobs lost and our high streets hit once again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A number of hospitality bosses have put their weight behind the industry body\u2019s campaign against the tax.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Palethorp, chief executive of holiday park firm Haven, said the tax would harm the job prospects of people in community hotspots \u2013 areas where he says employment opportunities are often scarce.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Vincent, Europe, Middle East and Africa president at hotel chain Hilton, said: \u201cTourism thrives when government and industry work together.
