Edinburgh Council has announced a partnership to plant 700 native trees in the capital as part of its ambition to become a Million Tree City by 2030.<\/p>\n

The council has partnered with IT and business consulting service firm CGI, who donated the trees as part of its tree-planting programme.<\/p>\n

Fifteen volunteers from CGI and the council, together with The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Councillor Robert Aldridge, have now planted the trees, which include English oak, green beech, elder, hawthorn, hazel, goat willow, crab apple and wild cherry, under the guidance of charity and social enterprise, Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust.<\/p>\n

CGI\u2019s tree-planting programme is a part of the company\u2019s No Planet B initiative, a UK-wide, employee-driven programme that engages employees in supporting CGI\u2019s environmental and sustainability objectives. <\/p>\n

The initiative promotes greener behaviours across the organisation, including supporting tree planting, eliminating single-use plastics and encouraging sustainable commuting.<\/p>\n

The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Councillor Robert Aldridge, said: \u201cTrees play a vital role in making our city greener and healthier for everyone, which is why we\u2019ve set an ambitious target to become a million-tree city by 2030. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe already have more trees in Edinburgh than people, but we\u2019ll only reach our target if everyone plays their part. So, I\u2019m extremely grateful to CGI for working with our Parks and Green Spaces team to plant these new trees, and for helping us to turn ambition into action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Maclean, vice-president, consulting services, at CGI in Edinburgh, said: \u201cCGI is proud to support Edinburgh\u2019s Million Tree City project through our own UK environmental initiative, No Planet B. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that we continue to back our commitments with action, including supporting biodiversity through local initiatives. <\/p>\n

\u201cSince our tree planting programme began, CGI volunteers have planted around 21,500 native trees across the UK to support biodiversity and climate action. <\/p>\n

\u201cA special thanks goes to The Lord Provost, the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust, and the volunteers from the City of Edinburgh Council who joined our staff to successfully plant the latest round of trees in one day, along with our partners Carbon Footprint Ltd.\u201d<\/p>\n

CGI has previously planted 250 trees at Hunters Hall, a site identified as an ideal location to enhance biodiversity in the capital and support local wildlife habitats. <\/p>\n

In total, the company has contributed 1,000 trees to Edinburgh\u2019s Million Tree City initiative, which has seen more than 885,000 trees planted across the city to date.<\/p>\n
