A senior Swansea politician has issued a stark warning over Welsh independence \u2014 claiming the country is currently up to \u00a315 billion a year better off<\/strong> as part of the UK.<\/p>\n

Mike Hedges says Wales benefits from significantly higher public spending than it generates in tax \u2014 with a gap he estimates at \u00a312bn to \u00a315bn annually<\/strong>, and potentially even higher.<\/p>\n

Writing in an opinion piece for Nation Cymru<\/a>, he argues that under the current system Wales receives around 10% more public spending per head than the UK average<\/strong>, while tax revenues per person are only about 75% of the UK level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That imbalance, he says, is fundamental.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Wales were to keep its own revenues and fund its own public spending,\u201d he suggests, \u201cit would face a large fiscal deficit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds that the scale of the gap is comparable to the entire Welsh health budget<\/strong> \u2014 underlining what he sees as the economic reality of independence.<\/p>\n

\u2018Stronger in a larger economy\u2019<\/p>\n

Hedges argues the UK\u2019s size is a key advantage \u2014 allowing wealth to be redistributed and cushioning regions like Wales during economic shocks.<\/p>\n

\u201cLarger countries can more easily withstand economic storms,\u201d he says, pointing to the role of UK-wide spending on areas such as defence, debt interest and national infrastructure.<\/p>\n

He also suggests that any move towards fiscal autonomy would require significantly stronger economic performance in Wales<\/strong> before it could become viable.<\/p>\n

Independence debate intensifies<\/p>\n

The comments come as Plaid Cymru continues to poll strongly \u2014 with projections suggesting it could emerge as the largest party after May\u2019s Senedd election<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hedges\u2019 intervention is likely to be seen as a direct challenge to that momentum \u2014 putting the economic risks of independence at the centre of the political debate.<\/p>\n

Key seat in the spotlight<\/p>\n

The issue is particularly significant in Swansea and Gower.<\/p>\n

Hedges is the sitting MS for Swansea East<\/strong> and Labour\u2019s top list candidate for the new G\u0175yr Abertawe constituency<\/strong>, making him the party\u2019s most likely candidate to be returned to the Senedd.<\/p>\n

Under the new voting system, voters will select parties rather than individuals \u2014 with candidates elected based on their position on party lists.<\/p>\n

Polling suggests Labour could win just one of the six seats available locally<\/strong>, placing added importance on Hedges\u2019 top ranking.<\/p>\n

Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart is second on the list and would likely need a stronger-than-expected Labour performance to secure a seat.<\/p>\n

Battle lines drawn<\/p>\n

With the election approaching, Hedges\u2019 message draws a clear dividing line \u2014 between those pushing for greater independence and those arguing Wales is financially stronger within the UK.<\/p>\n
