{"id":84774,"date":"2025-05-08T14:02:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T14:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/84774\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T14:02:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T14:02:14","slug":"ukraine-accuses-russia-of-breaking-own-truce-after-attacks-on-sumy-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/84774\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine accuses Russia of breaking own truce after attacks on Sumy | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine has accused Russia of breaking its own unilaterally declared three-day ceasefire hours after it began.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s air force said on Thursday that Russian aircraft launched guided bombs on the Sumy region of northern Ukraine three times after midnight local time (21:00 GMT), when Vladimir Putin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/4\/28\/russia-declares-unilateral-two-day-ceasefire-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 8-10 ceasefire<\/a> entered into force.<\/p>\n<p>A Ukrainian military spokesman cited by news agency Reuters said a 55-year-old woman had been killed in the attacks on Sumy. Regional rescuers said on Telegram on Thursday that \u201cnight shelling\u201d had caused fires to break out in three residential buildings, killing a \u201ccivilian\u201d without specifying the exact time when it had occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPredictably, Putin\u2019s \u2018Parade ceasefire\u2019 proves to be a farce,\u201d Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X on Thursday, referring to a planned May 9 parade on Moscow\u2019s Red Square to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union\u2019s victory \u2013 along with other Allied countries \u2013 over Nazi Germany in World War II.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian forces continue to attack across the entire frontline,\u201d Sybiha wrote. \u201cFrom midnight to midday, Russia committed 734 ceasefire violations and 63 assault operations, 23 of which are still ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Russian Defence Ministry, cited by Interfax news agency, said that Ukraine, in turn, had carried out 488 attacks on Russian targets and twice tried to break through the border in the Kursk region.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin has claimed the brief ceasefire, aimed at pausing hostilities during the high-profile WWII commemoration, will \u201ctest\u201d Kyiv\u2019s readiness for peace but Ukraine has slammed it as a farce.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/3\/zelenskyy-says-wont-play-putins-games-with-short-truce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a>, who has not committed to abide by the truce, insisted on Wednesday that his country stood by its offer to observe a 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not withdrawing this proposal, which could give diplomacy a chance,\u201d Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address. Russia, he said, had made no response to the 30-day offer except for new strikes.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, which has placed both countries under pressure to make peace, proposed the 30-day ceasefire in March, but Moscow said the measure could only be introduced after mechanisms to enforce and uphold it are put in place, later proposing the three-day truce as a \u201chumanitarian\u201d gesture.<\/p>\n<p>Military parade<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the three attacks on Sumy with guided bombs, there were no reports in Ukraine of any Russian long-range drones or missiles being launched on Ukrainian cities after the Kremlin-sponsored ceasefire kicked in at midnight, Ukraine\u2019s air force said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But Ukraine declared an air alert in its seven eastern regions, stating that there is a danger of Russia using ballistic missiles despite the Kremlin\u2019s ceasefire, the air force added.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin has said Russian forces will honour Putin\u2019s order for the duration of the holiday, but will respond \u201cimmediately\u201d if Ukraine launches any fire.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the anniversary events, Russian President Vladimir Putin is hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders in Moscow and will review a military parade on Moscow\u2019s Red Square on May 9.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before Putin\u2019s order was scheduled to enter force, Moscow and Kyiv staged aerial attacks, prompting airport closures in Russia and killing at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2025\/5\/7\/video-deadly-russian-missile-and-drone-attack-in-kyiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two people<\/a> in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>In Wednesday\u2019s video address, Zelenskyy also appeared to acknowledge Ukraine\u2019s targeting of Russian sites as the World War II commemorations approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is absolutely fair that Russian skies, the skies of the aggressor, are also not calm today, in a mirror-like way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Ukrainian leader marked the day by taking a rare walk in central Kyiv to pay his respects to fallen Ukrainian soldiers at a vast mound of Ukrainian flags planted on the city\u2019s central square.<\/p>\n<p>He described Putin\u2019s May 9 Parade as \u201ca parade of bile and lies.
