\n\tWarner Bros. has revealed that Stephen Colbert<\/a> and his son are developing a brand new \u201cLord of the Rings<\/a>\u201d movie. The announcement came Tuesday night via the studio\u2019s various social media accounts.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe video announcement opened with \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d director Peter Jackson giving a quick update about the next film in the fantasy franchise: Andy Serkis\u2019 \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum.\u201d Jackson said of the project, which is set for release in 2027, \u201cAndy is doing a terrific job. It\u2019s looking amazing. The script is coming together really well and I think it\u2019s going to be a really good film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJackson then teased his \u201cvery special partner,\u201d who will help develop the next film after \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum,\u201d titled \u201cThe Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past.\u201d That partner was none other than \u201cThe Late Show Host\u201d Colbert, who Jackson patched in through a video call. Colbert, a vocal Tolkien fanatic, then explained that the plot of his movie will come from chapters of \u201cThe Fellowship of the Ring\u201d that didn\u2019t make it into Jackson\u2019s 2001 adaptation.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me,\u201d Colbert told Jackson. \u201cBut the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in [\u2018The Fellowship of the Ring\u2019] that ya\u2019ll never developed into the first movie back in the day. It\u2019s basically the chapter \u2018Three is Company\u2019 [Chapter III] through \u2018Fog on the Barrow-Downs\u2019 [Chapter VIII]. And I thought, \u2018Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story. Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe late-night host said that after coming up with this idea, he discussed it with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, and worked out a \u201cframing device\u201d for the film. After the groundwork was laid, Colbert called Jackson, and over the last two years, they\u2019ve worked with screenwriter Philippa Boyens to develop a script.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film\u2019s official logline reads, \u201cFourteen years after the passing of Frodo \u2013 Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam\u2019s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThis new \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d project marks Colbert\u2019s first foray into blockbuster development. However, it is not his first collaboration with Jackson. Colbert had a small role in 2013\u2019s \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.\u201d He also directed Jackson, as well as \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d stars Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen and Elijah Wood, the 2019 short film \u201cDarrylgorn,\u201d which is set in JRR Tolkien\u2019s Middle-earth.<\/p>\n

\n\tNew Zealand-based screenwriter Boyens has a long history working with Jackson. She helped pen his \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d trilogy and \u201cfHobbit\u201d films, along with Fran Walsh. She also co-wrote Jackson\u2019s 2005 monster epic \u201cKing Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMcGee\u2019s writing credits, spanning TV and film, include work on \u201cStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,\u201d \u201cOuter Banks,\u201d \u201cThe Righteous Gemstones\u201d and \u201cBlue Bloods.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tTolkien penned \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d in the 1950s after the success of his 1937 book, \u201cThe Hobbit.\u201d Jackson famously adapted the fantasy saga into three films, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Widely considered to be Jackson\u2019s most celebrated work, they earned 17 Oscars, with 11 of those going to the final chapter, \u201cThe Return of the King.\u201d Jackson also adapted \u201cThe Hobbit,\u201d splitting the comparatively slim novel into three parts.
