{"id":849211,"date":"2026-03-25T11:39:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T11:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/849211\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T11:39:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T11:39:14","slug":"peter-kyle-hints-at-push-for-eu-customs-union-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/849211\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Kyle hints at push for EU customs union return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tWednesday 25 March 2026 11:29 am<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tWednesday 25 March 2026 11:32 am\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/peter-kyle.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Peter Kyle speaking at a podium during a press conference, addressing current issues and developments\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tPeter Kyle has talked up building closer ties with the EU.\t<\/p>\n<p>Business and trade secretary Peter Kyle suggested joining the EU\u2019s customs union could improve the UK\u2019s economic prospects, with new data suggesting that trade flows in London boomed last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After being asked twice whether war in the Middle East provided a stronger case for the UK to join the customs union, Kyle refused to rule out a return to the customs union.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He talked up building closer ties with the EU as offering the \u201cbest opportunity\u201d for the country\u2019s trade prospects and for the UK economy to \u201cfulfil its potential\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While he hailed deals with the likes of the US and India that would not have been agreed if the country was part of the customs union, Kyle later suggested that he did not want to get \u201cbogged down by institutional relationships\u201d and directly linked the UK to European countries in a global competition for businesses to grow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to seek opportunities as a continent because we are missing out on the wealth, the job creation and also the power, both hard and soft, that comes with the scale of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/investors-hit-out-at-peter-kyle-for-picking-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">innovation<\/a> that America and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/starmer-warned-on-severe-risk-of-trading-with-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">China<\/a> are capable of doing at this moment,\u201d Kyle told City AM.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to get bogged down in which institutional relationships we have when we have this huge opportunity to do things that actually transcend a lot of it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kyle also hinted that upcoming negotiations with the economic bloc\u2019s chiefs should go beyond food standards and energy markets, covering areas such as health technology, clean energy and automation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/sadiq-khan-urges-labour-to-back-return-to-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sadiq Khan urges Labour to back return to EU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tKyle follows senior Labour figures<\/p>\n<p>The business secretary has previously refused to rule out rejoining the EU\u2019s customs union despite government officials insisting that there were \u201cred lines\u201d on the terms of negotiations in the \u2018Brexit reset\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, senior Labour figures have talked up the prospects of building closer ties with the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health secretary West Streeting has also reportedly endorsed a return to the EU\u2019s customs union.
