The metallic wheel shows significant cracks, holes, and deformation along its treads, revealing internal mechanical components.\" width=\"800\" height=\"602\" class=\"size-large wp-image-845591\"  \/>The Mars Hand Lens Imager, a camera at the end of a robotic arm, took this photo on Monday of one of Curiosity\u2019s severely damaged wheels. <\/p>\n<p>The wheels are quite literally falling off NASA\u2019s Mars Curiosity Rover, which is still trundling over the Red Planet some 13 years after it was dropped off there. <\/p>\n<p>Photos taken on Monday, March 23, also known as Sol 4844, show just how much damage the surface of Mars has inflicted on the explorer\u2019s wheels. PetaPixel reported on the <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/10\/04\/theres-a-large-hole-in-the-wheel-of-nasas-mars-curiosity-rover\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state of the wheels in 2024<\/a>, and it was bad then. <\/p>\n<p>But as a series of RAW photos uploaded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/msl\/multimedia\/raw-images\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Mars Science Laboratory website<\/a> show, the wheels are in far worse shape now \u2014 sections of the tire sidewall have completely collapsed.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mars.nasa_.gov_msl-raw-images_msss_04844_mhli_4844MH0007690011800079E01_DXXX-800x588.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up view of a Mars rover wheel with a chevron tread pattern on the dusty, rocky Martian surface. The surface is coated with Martian sand.\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-845589\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>On X, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnishA_Moonka\/status\/2036616631863128376\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Anish Moonka explains<\/a> that the wheels are only 0.75mm thick and crafted from aluminum. The wheels began showing signs of wear 14 months after landing on Mars because of the sharp rocks punching holes through the tread of the tires. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNASA assembled a Wheel Wear Tiger Team (a crisis problem-solving tradition that goes back to Apollo 13) and got to work,\u201d explains Moonka. \u201cIn 2017, they uploaded a traction control algorithm from Earth that adjusts each wheel\u2019s speed in real time based on the terrain, reducing force on the front wheels by 20%. They rerouted the rover to softer ground and started driving backward when possible, because pulling wheels over rocks produces less force than pushing them into rocks.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Moonka says that after a certain amount of tread comes off, NASA has a plan to find a sharp rock on Mars and use it to rip out the damaged inner section of Curiosity\u2019s wheel, <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/if-necessary-mars-rover-curiosity-could-rip-its-own-wheels-off-to-stay-mobile\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">per IEEE Spectrum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity has six wheels and it\u2019s thought that the most damaged one is its middle-right wheel; some of the photos shows wheels that are in much better shape. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mars.nasa_.gov_msl-raw-images_msss_04844_mhli_4844MH0007720011800074E01_DXXX-800x588.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of a rover wheel on Mars, showing its metal surface covered with dust and dirt.
